So, the town of Whitby recognizes Canada's two officiai languages. What's next? Confirmation that the sun rises ln the east and sets ln the west? Council's decision to state the obvious. did provide good fodder for our town fathers, and mother, t0 make fiery speeches about how we ail shouid love Canada. But what did if realiy accomplish - a statemnent to their feilow Canadians that Whitby residents love God, country and Hockey Night in Canada? Accomplishing what? A much more positive step was suggested by councillor Tom Edwards when he proposed that Whltby ask the Association of Municipalifies of. Ontario f0 encourage twinning between Ontario and Quebec comn- munities. However, his proposai was shot down when some counciliors feit that this might be lmposIng Whftby's will on someone. Letters to the editor Polit icians using bilingual ramrod To the oditor:- Copy of letter ta Durham Centre MiP Allan Furlong. Dear Mr. FuAongW I amn writing you to register my displeasure with your conments on 'English Only" which appeared i the Whitby 'Free Press Feb. 14. As one who respects the rights of the individual but also believes in government of the people for the people, 1 arn against adding additional cost burdens on the residents of Ontario to make this province a bilingual province when the French language is used by less than 10 per cent of the popuflation. Surely that is the long range objective of Mr. Peterson. As bas been pointed out so often by people who have researched this subject thoroughly, unilinguai Anglo- phones of Ontario would be adversely affected -when competing for Government jobs. I would also like to point out that on a recent radio talk show on this subject it was mentioned that the province of Quebec does contain statutory legislation whereby Quebec province is unilingual, French being the language. I have no problem accepting that as part of their constitution, but I do have a problem with politicians like you and Mr. Peterson trying ta, ram this whole concept of bilingualism for Ontario down people's throats Free parking when Quebec is uniingual. I disagree with you completely when you say that "Finanail costs are not the reai issue but a bigoted reaction." I have great rsetfor my French friendsý, bttepoliticians seem to have lost a11 sight of aniy financial repnsblity toward the people of Ontario wbo have voted them into office. I agree wholéheartedjy with those areas of the province who have sent a message to, Mr. Potorson that they are fed up with the actions of bis govenment. In ciosing, I cani only hope that when the next election cornes around, the people will register their disSatisfaction with this governent i the pollinq booths. Your. i uuierl, J.P.
