OSHAWA 328 RITSON RD. First Class lIR HOW WILL THE MONEY BE USED? The community of Whitby is working hard to raise $5.5 million for the Hospital. So far, the response has been terrific because the cause its First Class. Ail of the money raised will be used to renovate existing departments and purchase new equipment. The renovations and restructuring will take place in such key areas as the emergency department, the lab, radiology, and physiotherapy to cope with the ever increasing outpatient volumes. Last year alone the Hospital treated more than 24,000 emergency cases and more than 15,000 physiotherapy cases. With advances in technology, more and more services are provided on an outpatient basis. But space is a problem. Patients use a converted closet as a changing room and at times they m ust sit out in the hall to wait for a procadure. The Hospital can average up tol2 outpatient procedur3s a day wit.i oruly a f ive stretcher capacity in the recovery area. This space ucrunch" is why the Hospita's Board of Governors approved the plan to restructure the entire area as a centralized ambulatory care centre. Such existing services as admitting, discharge planning, the diabetic clinic, chiropody, and the Sexuai Assault Care Centre would also be moved into this centre, bringing aIl of the outpatient services together. This plan will allow the Hospital to better meet the needs of the community. It also meets the new policy directions outlined by the Ministry of Heath which caîl for hospitals to reduce their dependence on inpatient beds and establish strong regional services which emphasize day treatment, outpatient and community support programs. The Hospital's equipment renewal plan accounits for*approximately $3.8 million of the Campaign goal. This program will enhance the quality and scope of heafth care services the Hospital provides. Some of the existing equipment hasn't been replaced in over 20 years -- the primary x-ray machine is a perfect example. Funds from the Campaign will enable the Hospital to replace it with a new, technologically advanced model which will not only improve the diagnostic capability. but will also expose the patient to lower, saler levels of radiation. In addition, this machine will allow the H-ospital to double current V*olumes -- something which may soon be necessary. The Carnpaign will also fund an'additional, fully equipped operating room to ensure shorter waits for surgical procedures, a nurse cal system which gives patients access to immediate nursing assistance . .. the list us extensive and impressive.
