The sporty, new Vokswagen Corrado adds a whole new dimension te the Volkswagen Moepowerful, more luxurlous and more expensive than the Scirocco (which bas been dropped for 1990), the Corrado is a sophisticated. 2+2 sports hatchbaclc. t is likely te compete with such sporty compacts as the Acura Integra, Ford Probe CT and the new ]Plymouth, Laser and Eagle Talon. The Corrado's striking body is built by Karmann Coachworks, a noted European coachbuilding firm that aise' builds the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet and the Scirroco. Though sornewhat stubby at the rear, the Corrado is very distinctive sud aggressive- looldng. Perhaps its most dramatic feature le the new autematic rear spoiler. At speeds over 72 knm/h, the spoiler raises autematically. about four inches in height, and then retracts when the vehicle slows to 20 kmh. The purpose of the autonxatic spoiler is to reduce tail lift at freeway speeds and enhance stability. The other practical benefit of this retracting spoiler le that it does not interfere with rearward vision during city driving, say when parallel parking or lane changing. A. supercharged 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine delivers 168 horsepower to the Corrado's front wheels. The unique G60 suriercharger was designed by THX NEW Volkswagen Corrado offers' a supercharged 1.8 âitre, four-cylinder,, englue, 2+m2 seating capacity, and a rear spolier that raises automaticafly at 72 km/h. Volkswagen and uses a spiral shaped chamber shaped like a <C.' A single intercooler cools the air to increase its density sud improve horsepower. The only transmission available is a new 5-speed manual unit with a cable gear shifting systeni rather than a rod-type shifter linkage. This is supposed te provide faster and more precise shiffing, but I found the shifts longer than average and the inkage looser than conventional shifters. The Corrado seats four people, and only four people. The fold.down rear seats are separated by a tall divider/ arnirest, and are best suited for children or for adults on short trips around town. The front seats offer excellent support and proved very comfortable on long drives. They are height adjustable and include seat heaters., Many luxury features are included as standard equpment on the Corrado, includting air conditioning, multi-function trip computer, AMM stereo cassette system, cruise control, power windows, -nirrors and centrai door-locIcing system, power rack and pinion steening, sud a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Four-wheel is<e brakes (soid in the rear, vented up front) with a four-wheel anti-lock bralcing system are also standard on the Corrado. The only options available are a two>-way sunroof, leather seats, and BBS alloy wheels. The Corrado is Mxost at homýe on the ighway. It offers excellent stability and straight tracking. Ini stop-sud-go city driving, the Review By Greg Wlson Corrado is a littie less comfortable. First gear is geared quite low, and it is best to move into second gear fairly quickly to get under way.
