'NO MONEY DOWN" FINANCING ON TrHE SPOT THE ALLNEW 1fCà0 il SWIFT SEDAN By Mike Kowalsld Town staff will investigate the feasibility of an outside organiza- tion assuming responsibility for Whitby's tourist information centre. The decision to review con- tinued taxpayer support of the Brock St. S'., building was nmade diiring last week's budget nieet- 1Imore, specific motion, direct- ingr the Town.to enter discussions hýI the Whitby Chamber of' Commerce about assuming con- trol of the centre, was defeated. Councillor Joe Bugeli said continued operation -of the* faci- lity was an unnecessary drain on municipal coffers. This year's budget sets aside $113,825 to operat the centre. Only $3,585 is, expected te be recovered from souvenir sales te tourists. "I suggest we oease this as a municipal operation and put ii the Chamber of Commerce pur- view where it properly belongs," sàid Bugelli. The west ward councillor said WhIitby'ýs business, comniunity is the major benefactor of the centre and should be asked te fund it. Bugelli also noted' that the centre duplicates services pro- vided by thé chamber's own office. Councillor Tom Edwards ter- nied Bugelli's suggestion a good one, but said the centre should not be foisted on the chamber without prior consultation. "How do we know the chamber bas the funds to do it?» asked Edwards1 pointing out that the chaxnber s budget is less than dayor Bob Attersley strong1ly rejected any talk of divesting the teurist centre from Town. control. He said Town officiaIs regu- larly receive praise from both tourièts' and residents about the centre. UI don't think this is an expen- citure the Town should walk awyfrom,» said Attersley. Big. ticket items to wait until.May By Mike Kowalsld Whitby taxpayers mnust wait until May before knowing what maojor capim tal projects are in str or the Town. Funding for big ticket itemns such as a new fire -hall, senior citizens' centre and renovation of the Centennial Building was not contained in this year's capital budget. A special meeting of council in ,May will decide on a three-year capital perogram which will ini- cludee above projects and other major expenditures. Budget committee chairman Joe Drumm sad the decision not to include the items in this years budget was «simply a niatter of what you can afford.» This year's capital budget of $9.3 -million is significantly lower than last. year's $26.8-million fITýr 1989 capital budget w as covered funding for the $10.5- million recreation complex and a $4.9-million works.yard. 'the 1990 budget includes $457,500 for construction of the Taunton Road works yard. The, bulk 'of its cost was provided for in the 1989 budget and through- a micipal debenture. Dm said that regardless of what council decides in May, no major projecta will be started this year, except for preliminary work on the works yard. While the budget makes no Provisions for* major expendi- tures, it ýdoes include the follow,, ing» -- $106,000 for the Port Whitby- Marina, te include $80,'000 forî the boat launch, ranip (work on, ramp area began last' year), $16,000for a marina'work boat tl.00for landscaing - 295,000 for a firè eot;art-< ment puxnper truck and $18,000 for a jaws of life, rescue, teol te replace the current one which is 10 years old- -$2.5-million for road recon-. struction; -$250,000 for two garbage trucks and $195,000 for a sewer, cleaner; -- $956,800 for development'of, new parkas and improvements toe existmng parks- Corne in and choose one today!
