The church is located at the corner of Centre and Coîborne streets. The hours are from 2 te 9 pan. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday to, 4 p.m. Quilts are displayed only once at St. Mark's, so this show will include the 500th quilt seen there. Many crib quilts, wallhangings and sinali quilted articles wiIl also be on display. Several quilts can be purchased. St. Mark's Quilters will encourage visitors to try quilting, and invite them to join their year-round, weekly quilting bee. Dorothy McPherson 'Boston Commons" quit, much admired at last year's show, went on to win the 1990 Canada Packer's competition. Both men and women are increasingly interested in quilta. Trhe- variety of techniques, textures and designa is almost limitiese. Each qufit, whether old or new, large or sinali, expertly done or assembled by a novice has appeal. S., WHITBY ~JALT 668s-2aa2 ADVERTISEMENT Rhythm & Blues At O'Toole'S1 Norm Bernard, who became a big league trumpeter after an injury ended his base- baIl career with the Boston Red Sox, is p erfobrming with his band at Orooles in Witby on Sunday afternoons. Active on the local jazz music scene, Bernard, a Newinarket resident, also manages his own entertainment booking and consulting agency, and has a large clientele in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. He was born in Freeport, Maine, son of a boat-builder from Prince Edward Island who headed south te take advantage of a better economy. As with sports, Bernard also showed an easy talent with music when he was young. When the junior bigh sehool band was short of trumpet players,, he picked up a trumpet, played it, a.nd found that the music camne quite naturally te him. But he favored the basebaîl bat as an instrument at that time, and eventually played right field for the Boston Red Sox, from 1957 te 1960. His teammate was Ted Williams. While travelling with the team, Berardplaedtrumpet wMth ocal ands wheneve ead the opportunity. A shoulder injury ended his basebali career, so, Bernard took up the trumpet fuli-time and stie at the Berkeley College of Jazz in Boston with the lead trumpet player from the Boston Sym- phony. Eti 1971, Bernard became lead trumpet with Woody Herman's Big Band, and in 1973 in Europe, became first trumpet with the James Lest Orchestra. He came te, Canada in 1974 and quickly became known in Toronte's musical circle. He freelanced for varlous groups on both the trumpet and flugelhorn. He moved te a Newmarket home to, be close te a golf course, a sport which he likes as much as trumpet-i>lavig. In adipay of versatility, he and the band perform classics of jazz and swing, including hi g band era tunes that usher many te, the dance floor.
