Each yeartie comrnittee decides on a theme and preparations for the parade begin. Organizing the parade is g monumental job; one which Sharon MacKinnon has talcen on for the past several years. Since 1974 the parades have been organized by 43roup '74' a women's group Who take on the parade as one of their major functions for the year. They also have a fundraiser where they 'rais. money for Denise House in Oshawa. Sharon is vice-president of the group. Past years' themes have been 'Olde e me Christmas ' 'hanks for the emories," 'Once <Jpon a Classic' and 'Live the Country Life.' "One of the most fun parades was 'Brooklin gus te Holywood, » says Sharon. «MtheI Brothers did a beauti- fui float on the Walt Disney theme and the Town of Whitby did a great 'deach Boys' float.» Tins year's theme is 'Step into the Nineties.' «Its very broad and futuristic,» says Sharon. «With Brooklin slated for 'a lot of development in the future decade, we thought it would be appropriate.» Sharon relates that thýe parade is led by a VIl> section ledb the Durham Regional Police chief and the Whitby fire chief. «ii. police have a 1974 cruiser and the fire dertethsa antique fire Sh~aron says they wouId like more com- mercial entries. "We try te make the parade bigger and better every year.» There are five sections to the parade: the. VIl section with pubhic figures and polticans(te include Kiayor Bob Atters- lyndnorth ward councillor ]Ross Bat- ten), the bands, commercial floats ($50 prize), non-commercial floats ($50 prize), and fancy dress segment that attracts many youngsters. There is also a cate- gory, with prize, for non-or .izational floats where familles or finds get tegether and create an entry.
