WIUTBY FME PRESS WEDNMSAY, JULY 25, 1990, PAGE il mflDIfiLflIMH1 Nature . is a big influence in art of LaurmLe Sage An exhibition of yaintings by regional artist Laurine Sage con- tinues at the Robert MeLaughlin Gallery until Aug. 26. This e'.hibition presents a ful range of Sage's work fr-om 1985 until the present. Laurmne paints in watercolor but prefers the acrylic mediunm used as though it were watercolor, usually very wet, so that she can do one wash, let it dry, and then rewoek it many times, letting her coats of paint dry between stages. She deals with her subjecta in different ways, relstically for Summer Garden, and abstractedly to handie subjecta found in nature. For instance, she bas used the butterfly as a design in her Metamorphoeis Series, depicting the transformation fromn larvae into aduit butterfly in glorious color. I arn simplye nthralled with the butterfly and I can't get it out of my systema -- other insecte also. Nature and my surroundings are a very important influence on my work," says Sage. Sage, who now lives in Picton,' Ont., was a longtime resident of Oshawa. She studied etching at York UniversiWys Glendon College and at the University of Guelph, as well as life drawing at Trafalgar Castie School in Witby. She found most exciting a course she took with Yvonne McKague Housser, the well-known' artist and friend of Oshawals Isabel McLaughlin. She also enjoyed studying with many other good teachers, including Aba Bayefsky.and Alex Millar. She is a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolor, and is represented in Her Majesýty the Queen's collection at Windsor Uastie, and many other major collections. Sage bas won several notable awards. An opening reception will be held Thursday, July 26, at 7 p.nx. at the gallery. Eccles irexw-dhibit lbegin An exhibition of 23 major abstract paintings by regional artist Ron Eccles will be presented by the Robert McLaughlin Gallery from July 26 until Sept. 14. This exhibition takes a retrospective look at the last eight years of the artist's work, a period of intense experimentation. Eccles' work is organized and immaculate. Using cils .and acrylics on shaped canvases, his highly stylized, geometric., notations, often Uines set on top of a surfao built up with sand, recail the minimalist art of the 19608. These works, with their lyricism of color, give an impression oflirnitless spaces. Rfis work exudes a luxurious ease and calin. Eccles says: "In my Sandbar Series, 1 used sand in the work, mixed with pigment and medium, to create a sense of drift and flow." He suggests the real source for his paintings: I walk along the shoreline of Lake Ontario and imagine what it would have looked like before it now exists. I hope my work will cojure the mood of where people are and how they relate to Lake Ontario and the Ridges." Eccles first exhibited at the Robert McLjauglin G1allery in the 1976 show 'Of Iuman Bondage,' then in ' Durham Region Prints? in 1977 and in many subsequent exhibitions. Three- of his paintings and two prints are in the gallery's permanent ccellection. Eccles wras born in Oshawa and studied at the Ontario College of Art and the University of Guelph. Rlis work is represented in the collections of the Canada Council Art Bank, Bell Canada and many public galleries. ifiIŽDfHS ~ 300 TAUNTON ROAD.
