Tif E WA1TING ROOM Late last Saturday night - early Sunday morning - I spent five hours in the emergency care ward of a local hospital. Fortunately, I was only waiting for a friend who was being treated for what turned out to be a relatively minor respiratary ailment. While in the waiting room I met several friends cf a young woman who had been involved in a traffic accident. Her boyfriend, perhaps 20 years cf age, was healthy and handsome and was trying very bard ta appear calm and composed as he reassured the vitm's younger sister that everything would be OK. The sister, age 16 or 17, was a beautiful young lady with long, shiningbair and sweet eyes that sparkled, even thoug they were redý fromn crying, and tear continued ta, stream, down ber cbeeks. ler own boyfiend and brother sat beside ber and also tried ta console ber. I neyer met the accident victim but by looking at the younger sister 1 imagined tbat she was equally as beautiful. lier parents were with ber the entire time and neyer emerged fromn the intensive care unit. Three cousins, two young men and one young woman, ail under 25, were alo in the waiting room. The young woman bad taloen charge of the situation. Alternately speaking with the doctars, nurses and parents, she passed information on ta, the waiting friends sa, that they could telephone tbeir families and otber anxious friends who were not at the DRI VIN SAFELY wuth RANDY RANDY MoLEAN l8 A PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER .WHO SPECIALIZES IN TRAFFIC SAFETY. Only once did she corne directly into the waiting room afler talking to the doctors without flrst stopping to wipe her eyes. The victimIs boyfriend was a nice guy. Heé camne over to me, a complete stranger, and started to tell me about bis girlfriend. "She was in an accident Ia"t night," he began. Her face was badfly, very badly cut an~d bruised - she would need reconstructite surgery to repair the damage - she may loge 'her sight ip one eye. But everytbing was goirïg to be 01C, everyting, was going to be 0Ks, everything was going to be 0K,, he said repeatedly, to convince himself more tban me.- At bis-suggestion, the younger, sist.r and her boyfriend went outside for a 1alk hoping the cool morning- air would help ease hér héartache. With the Young girl out of sight tlýe victim's boyfriend no longer feit compelled z act as strong and confident. Tears came to hýs eyes as he started to talk about how specuil she was, how much fun she was to be with, and how she bad neyer ever hurt anyone in ber life. Then in an instant bis sadness turned ta anger. Anger, a]most rage, à t the other driver. The driver who bad caused the accident. The driver who was not injured. He told everyone wbo would listen, including a recently arrived elderly couple who really didn't want ta hear <at least not in the language he was now using) exactly what he thought of the other driver. He slapped the arm of bis cbair - bard - then the wail, then the door, before the female cousin returned ta the waiting room. She hugged bim and they stoo d crying together for a brief time. Everyone in tbe room felt their pain. At least one other persan who bad neyer met the injured girl was openly crying and the rest <of us werent far behind. I didn't asic how tbe accident bappened. It really wasn't any of my business. But I understand tbe boyfriend's anger, the accident didn't have ta bappen. I suspect tbat it was preventable and, in hindsigit, probably ail tSo easily preventable. About 85 par cent of ail accidents are preventable.
