Ken Donnelly, waste manage- ment manager for the Regian, says that the study will'consist of a contrai group of 2,400 house- holds in Pîckering. Donnelly exp[ains that the study will centre around twa of thgarbage routes in Piceig "Twelve h undred households (on one garbage route) will be issued backyard composters while another 1,200 households (along the other garbage'route). selected for the study- will be asked not ta, use compostera. "The, weigh vehicles will deter- mine the difference in garbage of the two routes and measure the effect of the composters. '~eple will be given diaries, epIls Oand fisherman scales 50 they can measure how much waste they are diverting,» says Donnelly.*1 "We will be surveying thern four times ta <rt an idea of the problema, and how they feel about It. We will be collecting hard diversion data as well as esoteric data. «Tis9 is the first community- wide. compréhensive backyard composting studyin the world,» says Donnelly. "Funding cornes frorn the Ministry of the Environnent, and the Ontario Multi Materials Recycling ic., (OMMRI)» Donnelly says the project will start as soan as the composters are delivered. The Region has ordered- 20,000 corn osters, which at this tirne are on y avail- able ta households in Pickering. The 1,200 composters will be issued free of charge ta, the sur- vey households, and another 1,200 will be given ta the other contrai group who have been asked not ta use composters once the ýsurvey is completed. The remaining 18,600 compas- ters will be sold ta Pickering residenits for $25 each. The Region plans ta monitoir of the composters 50 they are not pur- chased in bulk and resold for profit. Donnelly says that a four- month study iast year of -60 househalds in Newcastle showed very positive results. "People were able ta divert a full third of their household waste from Iandfill. This, along ,with an il per cent diversion frorn the blue box program, saves a substantial arount from land- fil.e» Donnelly also says that the compostera they have chosen are aesthetica1lyyleasing. They mea- sure about three cubic feet and are made of cedar. Next year, third quarter. «I feel aur record 1is god »saYs9 Emm.* 'Tm pleased the kegion has faith in us. We're running a first-class healthy operation in times of growing* pains. Recyci- able materials are up 25 per cent. We're enthused abut that. People are really supportive, of the recyclingeéfforts.» Emm says although things are going well and hie is glad the Region is happy with the centre's performance, hie would like more clarification as ta what the Region's plans are. 1 It's extremely difflicult not ta know- your future, where you're gaing. We have almost 100 people on staff.» Hle says with, that ainount of volume, it's im- portant ta, know where you're going. firlet after the study, Donnelly gays that the Regian. hopes ta make the compostera ayailable ta other areas of-Durhamn. - Tuneé Up Speclis.
