Pauline Laing, director of edu- cation reporting for the board's multicultural and race relations committee, said at Monday's board meeting that the board will request a voice on the task force since it plays an intregral part in the communication pro- cess. The multicultural and race relations committee met Sept. 20 te discuss and assess the ocur- rences at the school. .A report from the committee stated that there was -no- incident which threatened the safety- of students at PickeringHki h School; that the rumor of troub1e, stemmed from a lingering ani- mosity caused by a conflict at the schqIlast year which had begn between a black and a white student; that the anger was revi- ved when a black student invol- ved in those events was not re-admitted te the.school this year, since he does not live within the school boundaries. The report goes on te, say that, school. administration learned of alleged notices posted in public places inviting su pporters of the non-admitted student te corne te the school seeking a fight. No notices were. actually, seen by school officiaIs and no fighting occurred. Police were ýcalled in, however, te deal with any poten- tial trouble., The committee says that although nothing, happened, the incident created Widespread*res- ponse in the comimunity, much:of it focussed on the schoo. Raa elements of the event also lead to reflection among parents, students, school staff and community members about potential or existing racial ten- sions at the school and in the comrnuity. The report says that the man- date of t he schools is te educate students about the values and practices consistent with rgciql harnony, and te insist tat the students model those behaviors and values ini the educational setting. The committee developed a list Of il recommendations. Arnong themn were: that the board ac- knowledge that racial tensions eist and there fore learn specific waYs te recognizle racial issues in schools; that they complete' and implement'policies on race rela- tions, predit future needs, have training Programs for teachers and staff, and invite parental participation in board and school committees;. Laing said that racial harmony is very much a community con- oern and that everyone must take part'in assuring that har- mony.
