"Vie have three confirxned cases of measies in Whitby,» says Dr. Steven Gold, Durhams act- img medical officer. "One child developed pneumonia. There were no complications with the, other two." Gold says that brain damage resuits in one in every 2 000 cases' of measies. Other complica- tions include ear infections -and pneumonia. "If immunization levels are not maintained there will be out- breaks' Iniections usually start at one p oint and spread. Everyone 8hould niake sure their immunization is adequate." The first case of red measles was a child attending Fairy Glen daycare in Whitby. Since *then a child from St. Matthew the Evangelist school and one &com St. Bérnard's have corne down with measies. On Oct. il1' St. Matthews was the soene of a vaccination clinic where 97 stuidents from St. Mat- thew's and St. Bernard's were vaccinated. «We have issuéd warnings and are issuing suspensions across the region for children not ade- quately vaccinated,» says Gold. According to reports, 95 stu- dents from St. Matthews and 125 students. from St. Bernard's have been suspended. Gold says that, geographically, Fr. Leo J. Austin and Glen Dhu are the schools that could next be facing outbreaks. "Kids from Glen Dhu MIgh play with kids from, St., Mat- thew's-, says Gold. "It could spread from there.» He says that outbreaks have been occurring across' North ATnerica. «Last spring there was an epi- demic in Colorado." Aithou*gh Gold satys he's not expecti ng epi- demie levels, he has appealed to parents to make sure their chil- dren are properly vaccinated. Symptoms of measies are high fever, persistent coughing, red eyes and a red rash. Any child dlisplaying these syrnptoms shouki be kept hOme from school and taken to their doctor for examiniation.
