Charitable organizations and service organizations wiil be in the downtown from 10 -a.m. until 4 p.m. in an effort to raise funds for many worthwhile programs. For a minimum of $1 donation, members cf the community will receive a colored light bulb to have piaced on the Tr-ee of Hope, which is located at the Whitby Public Library. Each donated- bulb will be usedý to replace a white bulb on the trees lit during the tree-lighting ceremony on Nov. 30. The goal is to change ail the white bulbs on. the trees ta, colored ta symboize the funds' raised for the ten charity groups and community, organizations participating in the Tree of Hope event. The Whitby General Hospital Auxiliary wil be located at the Miracle Food Mart, 601 Dundas St. W. In addition ta Christmas bulbe, they will be seiling mugs in an effort ta, raise funds for the Whitby Generai Hospital First Class Fund Campaign. The Arthritis Society - Whitby Chapter will be situated in front of My Dad's Store on Brock St. S. The donations that they coliect wiil be used for research and the treatment cf patients suffering fr-om the disease. The Durharn Lung Association will be selling colored bulbe near the Whitby fire station on Breck St. S. Donors will aiso, receive Christmas gift tags. Funds raised will be used to assist local residents suffering from ashthnia, emphysema and lung'cancer. Those visiting Pearson lanes can donate ta, the TRACK organization (Therapeutic Riding Association for Chailenged Kids - Uxbridge). The aim cf TRACK is ta, provide a safe remediai riding perogrn for disabied children in xbdridge and surrounding areas, includingWitby. To, make this program work, a teain of volunteers is needed, made up cf an extensive volunteer network, a. riding instructor, as well as a physiotherapist when needed. Specialized equipment, faciltities and kind, steady herseýs compiete the prograxn. The majoity cf the coste of the program are covered by money received from donations and fundraising. Bulbe will be soid in front of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce at thýe four corners by Club Central from the Canadian Mental Health Association, Durham branch. The Head Inury Association cf Durham Region provides support and resource information for the injured and their familles. They also strive ta educate the public to problems and needs of the head irjured. Their stations will be at Jerriys the, Drug Warehouse and at the Wihitby IGA on Brock St. S. While in the downtown, visit with members from the Learming Disabilities Association Of Oshawa. This organization net only- serves as an advocacy agency for children with learning disabilities but aiso provides parental support by means of special meetings, library resources and llaising with boards cf education. Each summer they aise organize "Camp Cando" in Oshawa. This energetic group wili be selling bulbs in front of Canadian Home Therapy, south of the Banik cf Nova Scotia. Members cf the Durham Down Syndrome Association wiIi be sellng buibs at the Mr. Grocer Plaza on Brock St. S. The association is a non-profit organi- zation for parents, professionais and others striving te improve the quality cf life or those with Down's Syndrome. It provides parents and others with information and support through monthly' meetings, a resource library and social events. The Knights cf Columbus, St. John the Evangelist, Council' 4895, Grand Knight Martin Turpin will, be selling colored bulbs in front cf the Knights cf Columnbus Hall on Brock St. N. Big Sisters NOW (Newcastle- Oshawa-Whitby) is actively recruiting volunteers. T'here a.re now 42 girls on the waiting list.
