Duimp opponents applaud Region's action By Mike Kowalski -Durhamn Region had ne choice but, to abandon its search for a long-termi landfill site, says an opponent of a potential dwnp nea. Whitb . ýMilton Mowbray, chairman of a citizens' group opposed te a garbage dump near theWhiMtby- Pickering border,, was responding te, Friday~s decision of the Region'so waste management coimi ttee.é ThIe,committee recommended that ail its proposed sites -- an interim ,dump in north Pickering (Whitevale) and five long-term candidate sites in various muni- cipalities -- be scrapped. neof thé candidate sites was ,«' 650-700-acre location west of Lakerldge Rd. and north of Conc. 7 -in Pickering. 1 (The committee's recommenda- tion is stili te be approved by regional council but that is not expeted te be a problem.) The committee's decision was ini response te a new provincial waste management strategy announced by Ontario Environ- ment Minister Ruth Grier last week..1 The program involves greater emphasis on waste reduction; an improved environmental assess- ment process and creation of a Greater Toronto Area public sec- ter authority te find a long-terni site. "In view cf the initiative taken by the province, it makes sense for the Regiot take the action it did, said Mowbray. "They've <Region) taken all the flack, it's reasonable for someone else te take it now. It's a sensible decision on their p art.» «However, Mowbray warns that dump opponents should not cele- brate prematurely. «It doesn't mean there won't be a dump in Whitevale. They could reach a decision that there is no alternative, the same for the other sites. «But one cau breathe easier for a few minutes."» Mowbray is hopeful the pro- vince will now make a "serious» ,attempt at reducing waste. -.He said the government can lead the way by legislating gainst unnecessary packaging adforcing manufacturers te produce more reusable con- tainers. Locally, Durham Reoexon can continue its recycling and coin- posting measures, said Mowbray. 'We also want people in the arate pay attention on a volun- TheUntedChrces erin Whi. * *klninit ou tary basis te reducing their gar- baffe," said Mowbray. "If we can't reduce our own garbaeweeno in a good moral position te complain about our area being chosen 'for a garbage dump.» Mewbray aIse vowed that bis committee will not fold. «We will continue,, te monitor the situation. W. don't want te be taken by surprise at some future point.» Another interested observer of last week's activities is Gerry Emm, chairman cf Durham Recycling Centre mnc. The centre, which provides the blue box recycling service in Dur- harn ceases operation this week ater failing te win a long-terni contract for the service from the Region. (Although the centre will close its doors, the Region's works department will talce over blue box .processing operations Dec. Emm said the environment minister's announcement justi- fies- the recycli ng centre's efforts.- «It's what we've been saying ail along, tee much emphasis has been put on burying garbage and not enough on waste manage- ment, said Emm. "Wé, the public, have been doing our part, now if we can get governmenits te do more we will be succese -'ul.» BROOKLIN UNITED CHURCH 19 Cassels Road East, Brookiin Sujxday, 1Dec.,2nd -AdvsrUIt 11:00 arn-Advent Communion Service, welcoming of new members, .Dedication of-New Elevator Sunday Dec., 91- Adwent Il 11:00 arn - Whte Gîft Service, Sunday Sohool Christmas Pageant Sunday, Dec&, l6th -Advnt 111 1 1:WOam Christmas Choral Service 7:,00 prn Christmnas Carolling with the Sociables ST.
