WHITY FREE PRESSI WEDNESDAY, FBRUAU e, 31, PAGE 17 Comie pe:rformances boost 'Criminals in Love' Fine comic performancso high- Iight the Durham Shoestring Perorer' roduction of George F. Walkere8 U=m'ale iLove!' In a play made up of veteran performers and newcomers to the community theatre stage, it is the veterans who -wbile portray- ing unforgettable characters, Provide moat of the laughteýr as well as the more serjous momnts. But Brad Carson, as William the buin, and Sharon Walmsiley, as Wineva, the criminally insane aunt, have plenty of character to work with, and they make the most of the opporunîty. Carson, who appears in his role even before the play begins, is, it would aeem,, an intelligent, executive type who chucked it al for life as a bum. He spouts philosophy while drinking after shave,. and his transform-ation back to a normal Mie, as he becomes the. father figure to Junior, is a point of fascination. .Equally faacinating is Wineva. She, like William, is out of touch. with what onçmight consider as normal. Un î~.Wlliam, howe- ver, her flaw is flot booze but mnsanity. As rendered by Walms- ley, .Wineva is a frightening maniac who dominates the stage. They are characters in the "working-class, east end of a big City," _presumably Toronto. Junior Dawson is a 19-year-old whose father, Henry, a chronie offender, is ini jail awaiting sen- tence for bis latest crime. Junior only wants the «des- tiny" of father and son, but that is -an impossible relationship for a brutal,. uncaring father. Hrenry wants Junior ta let bis uncle and aunt use the faxnily home for criminal activity, and the plot' turns on the anguisih of Juniior and bis friends as reluctant cri- minaIs. ofytan Parks, as Junior, bas one ofth e most difficult roles i the play, as the bridge ta, the other characters such as bis girlfriend Gailf bis father, bis new friend Wilhfam and aunt Wineva. Parka, for whom love with Gail is a constant throughout the play handles well the comic elemients of bis role tbat include head foot and a njf*uriýs as the contu;sed' parcpantin crime. Laua ooper, as Gail, and ]Renee *Racineas Gail's friend Sandy Mies, also show well in their community stage. debuts. Gail like Junior, is an innocent youti intinMidated by the threa- temng Wineva and swept up in bier criminal schemes (we neyer meet the uncle). Meanwbile, Sandy Miles, who bas tried pro- stitution, seems to regard crime as part of hier career develop- ment. Timmng and flow, key elements, especially ta the plays comedic movement, e sometimes lack- ing during the opening night pefrance. ]Rather, timing in dialogue seemed uncertain, hesitant or muffied for brief moments, even in a setting of coarse, Estireet language. The set constant tbroughout to convey a «trap]2ed» or "bad aide of tawn» existence from which one could not easily escape, wvas simple, yet well- conceived; lighting was efficient for <quick scene changes, again helithe pWLs movement..
