After two1 meetings with a.pro-1 vinçial conciliator, negotiations between the Town and Local 53 of the Canadian Union of Public' Employees (CUPE) are on hold. «Were still talking but we've taken a recess to re-assess our positions," said CUPE represen- tative Jimi Woodward. I Although talks wiil resume at a future date, the conciliator bas not yet called the two sides back to the table, said Woodward. The Town's 258 inside and outside workers are. seeking a new contract to replace the two- year pact'which expired March 31. They have voted te strike if a satisfactory agreement cannot be reached wth the municipality. Woodward said no elected offi- ciais have participated in the discussions. However, this is not unusual, said Woodward, negotiations are usually the responsibility, of senior management. "By and large the politicians don't show,.although sometimes I wish they would,» said Wood- ward. While the union bas so far declined to reveal its demands, Woodward previously'noted that other municipalities have settled with their employees.. Last month Ajax workers received a. two-year deal which included a 10.3 per cent wage increase and improved health benefits.
