Their understanding and special siilis were recognized at a p rovincial level during National Vol-unteer Weekc, April 26 ta May 2, in Kingston, Ont. The O'Connors were selected to receive the Community Service Award by the Ministxy of Community and Social Services. They were nominated by Durhamn Association for Family Respite Services for "outstanding contribution(s) made by volunteers working in ninistry- funded prograzn." This award recognizes a maximum of 10 volunteers in each of four regions annually. Quotations -from the nomination include: "Joyce and Jim welcome aduits with developmental handicaps inta their own family on a regular but fleible basis. Lengths of stay vary from a weekend up ta, one month. "For over il years they have shared flot only their home, but their cottage as well. This bas enabled some of their 13 special needs' friands ta, experience cottage life for the first time." The benefits are felt by al three parties involved. The individual with the handicap bas an opportunity ta experience an alternative fainily lifestyle through food, pets, hobbies and routines. The entire hoet family enjoys volunteering by meeting new challenges; learning new ékills, sharing fears,'hopes and- dream while helping afiother persan -ta achieve fflment. The. client families bave developed- absolute trust'in* the Connors over a period'of time and know that their sons or daughters will be happy and well looked after.
