TIhe exhibition grew out of ber interest i American painter Emil Carîsen, wiiich led to otherý works by his contemporaries Elliott Dainlgerfield, Charles Harold Davis, gaines Ruger Donoho and Carles Webster Hawthorne. Six of the eight works included i the exhibition belonged to Gerald R. Larkin (1884-1961), son of Peter Charles Larkin, founder of the Salada Tea Co. LarkÉin'scontemporary Charles S. Band acquired many Amern- can paintings before disposing cf them in favour of Canadian art works. Much of his collection came te the AGO in 1970. The only work in the exhibi- tion that did net belong te Band or Larkin is a work by Donoho. The five artists shared more than common patronq, and a New York base: with t he excep- tion of Daingerfield, ail studied i Paris.
