The 12-part series will focus on such tepice as ingredients for a healthy baby, Positive parenting, balancing work and family, single parenthood, penting the child with. specIL needs and two programs especially for teens. The committee expects te produce a series which presents a realistic view of famuly life. The Durham Region 'District' Health Council (DH-C) is now accepting applications forhealth promotion seed grants and communit garden projects, says Dr. David Fitzpatriclc, chair, of the communityhealth comnittee of council. Seed grants provide up te $10,000 te support I community action in health promotion. Seed grants are intended te help conimunities engage in a planning process te identifS' local health _promotion needs, develop a plan o' action and/or carry out a ha th promotion project requi- ring a small amount of funding. Cornmunity garden projects ntnd related initiatives are per1 cent- of members ,being consumers, 40 per ce nt being service providers and 20 per cent being regional govenmen representatives. Brunelle joins the council as regional governient repre- sentative. Linda Clements, executive director of the Canadian Mental Health Association Durham Branch, joins the council as a service provider representative, with experience in mental health services, particularly in conununity-based mental health The series will be aired during the fall 1993 cormnunity tele- 'vision season. Guest speakers for the series will encourage everyone from teens te career-mindfed prson planning te have a fsmuily later nos think about what makes families strong. If youre aparent with astery te tell, a teenager with a message for other teens, or an individual with interestA'experience in writing scripts for education prograins, the Healthy Familles Durhami committee would like you tejoin their discussions. Other activities of the comxittee include promoting services in the cormnunity which strengthen the family or help one-time grants that should not exceed $10,000. The proj et are intended te foster local leadership, improve access te fresh, nutritious food, offer opprtunities for nutrition education and engage people in healthy outdoor recreation.
