GML.A X ey er - eport THFREE C19ABITIES UNITE TO RECYCLE Tecycling Together is a group of three charities in the Ottawa area which share a location that diverts, lrg quantities of textiles from landfill. r Conceived as a unique recycling idea two years ago, Ottawa Neighbourhood Services,, St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Salvation Army, wttie finiancial assistance of the federal and provincial governments, purchased capital equipment, selected' a site and brought a plant into %p»ration. The operation provides clothing ta the needy in the, Ottawa/Carleton area, as well as makes clothing available at bargain prices ta those with fixed or limited incarnes. It alsc> generates' revenue for the sponsoring charities froni the sale of clothing, with which ta fuànd charitable and rehabilitation programs. Rccing To gether furnishes textile brokers with a supply. of rmxed cloth that provides clothixig ta foreign countries, as well as retrieves and recycles natural fibre (wood, cotton) and synthetic fibres for upholstery wadding. Currently, Recyching Together bas achieved an operating level of approximately 25,000 Ibs. of material. per day. Clothing donations ta charities, curbside textile pickup by Laidlaw as part of the City of Ottawa's blue box prograni and a rowing involvement by local industrial, commercial and institutional organizations, provide Recydling Together with material ta process. The initial sort identifies which items can be used by the three charities locally and diverts these items ta the second sort area. Clothes that can be sold in thrift stares or given away are separated inta about 50 different categories. Material thatdoes not go ta stores is;baled and sold ta clothing brokers in Toronta, Montreal or New York. Clothing is then resorted for various recycling used in the rag trades and for shipment overseas. The highly motivated 30-inemberstf was amnalgarnated forni thýe three charities'and bas learned ta work .together efficieri iy ta accomplish what bas been acliieved ta date.
