Wihitby had won the silvor stick regionals in Bramalea during the Christmnas .holidays, and was eeeking to dofend the international silver stick finals chanipionship they won last year as minor peewees. In the opening gaine of the tournament on Thursday, Whitby blow away a teani froin Winnetka, Illinois 9-0. Paul- Gray stood out with three goals and two assiste, while Grant Bouter had two goals and an assist. Other ecorers included Jamie Barnott and Todd Farquharson with a goal and assiet each, Matt Quart and Brian Vinent with a goal each, Dan Thorne and John Lng wth a pair assists each and Aaron Bryant with a single assist. Rich Sanders earnod the shutout. Against a strong teainall the way from Anchorage, Alaska, in the next gante, VWitby gained a 1-1 tie. Gray tied the game up in the second period with the Ln Whitby goal, assisted by Barnott and Quart. Although dominating the third period, the Whitby shooteirs could not find the net and had to settie for a tie. Dan Fletcher played another strong gaine as the Whitby backstop. Whitby then went on to dofeat a teani froin Clinton, New York 5-3 in the third gaine. After allowing Clinton te score at the 25-second mark of the first period, Whitby took control of the gaine with Quart scoring the tying goal fin Gray and flarnett. Later in the saine period, Gray scored on a power play, assisted by Barnett and Gilmour. Whiltby attempted te sit on the two-goal lead snd it nearly backfired. A teain from nearby Çlearwater, Ont. was the opposition in the final gaine for the championship. [n the firet two periods, Clearwater took a commanding 4-1 lead. Whitby's goal was scored by Quart, assisted by Gilmour and Dan Bosco. Whitby came out with a much better effort, but was unable to crack the strong Clearwater defence in a scoreless third period. Whitby'e major peewee AAA teain, sponsoréd by Maketeel Service Centre, split the firet two gaines of their opening playoff round with the Central Ontario Wolves. Despite being outehot 30-19, Wolves played their best gaine of the season and beat Whiitby 4-2 on Saturday.
