Whitby Free Press. Wednesday, February 10, 1993, Page 23 A HOME DESIGN AND IMPROVEMENT FEATURE Barrier-free living in the Idea Home The Home & Design Centre has adopted a family -- not a real one, but a '90s modal for the Idea Home. Grandma visits frequently and uses the guest suite. Dad works outside the home, and his daughtar likes dancing and having friands for sleap-overs. Mother works at home and uses a wheelchair. The Idea Home 1993 has been renovated with the physically challenged in mmnd. But these ideas would improve the convenience of any home, not just for seniors or the disabled. The home appeals to active, ambitious people needing barrier-free accommodations to live independently. And it's for pepe who love to decorate with bdcolours and easy-to-learn paint and paper techniques. The kcitchen was designed by EZ Access and installed by Design Cabinets. The list, of adaptations includes lowered counters, pocket doors, a shallow sink, feather-touch Moen faucet, pullout work surfaces and ironing board, * front-mounted electrical plugs and AEG drawer-style oven. The Robertson custom elevator in the family room is luxuriously finished with French doors and natural wood. The leaded glass door is a remote/pushbutton Stanley Magie Door opening to an exterior rarnp. The master bathroom has non-slip floor tiles from Ramca Tlle. The whael-in shower and accessible vanity was designed and installed by Adaptable Design. Light switches are at waist levaI and the special needs phone was supplied by Bell Telephone. APSOCare Systems has Ioaned adaptive fashions, including Making decor 'work'5 By Mark Reesor Tha bard part of decorating your home, is coming up with a design you re really 'happy with, says Witbyd interior decorator Yvonne McRae. "A lot of people say 'I can tel you what I adon t lika, 1 just don't Inow what it is I want...'(often) they've done things and know it doasn't work but the~y don't know why it doesn't work.» That's where 'Finely Finishad' cornes in. McRae, who began her business in Auguast, works closaly with clients, in their homes, helping them to come up with an ap<ropriata decor. It'sthe customer's store that cornes te your door... everything>s done in a van and I taka aveny- thiné te the customaer -- theyd éo it in thair own home, in t eir own lighting and thair own cern- fort." 'Finaly, Finished' handles any- thing to do with intarior dacorat- ing, says McRae. "I see my job as basically trying to buy into my cliant's draam, and allowing their dream to become their raality... they've ail got my stamp on it to a certain extent, but it's theirs... "I try to axplain te my clients why a certain colour or fabric works, as opposed te coming in and saying 'this is what you naed,' this is why you need it and this is why it's going te work, end of story.' Another concern is helping clients get value for money, says McRae. "They're going to spend money on decorating-,I want to help them spend it the best way.... I'm going te go in there and tell tham the best way te spand their decorating dollar at this point for them." McRae says she feals "a smar- ter client, for me, is a batter client -- the more informed they are... the smartar decision theyre going te make in the end» Velcro front-closing sweats, plush slippers, a wheelchair quit and accessory bag. The accessible closet design is by Space Age Shelving. ' Tours of the Idea Home may be arranged by calling the Idea Place at (416) 427-4332, located on the northeast corner of Hwy 401 at Brock Rd. in Pickering. The Heart and Stroke Foundation is the recipient of 25 per cent of revenues from the Idea Home '93 annual admission pass ($2.25). Pariingwt How do you redecorate when you're overcrowded, but you just can't part with any of your stufl?' Are these things really ' stufi' or are they prized family possessions? Sort through your possessions and note items of quality or sentimental value. Then decide what items to keep and throw out. What to do with what's left? Here are a few suggestions: ,' Create an album with al those drawings the children made a hundred years ago. If you've been collecting knick-knacks, display them beautifully in a wall unit or on open shelving. * Furniture accumulated over the years is sometimes a mixture of styles that can createaa cluttered look. Formn groupings with similar styles. Reuphoîster or cover chairs in the same or complementary fabrics. This will co-ordinate the various styles and, in turn, create uniformity. *Pieces of questionable qult an be painted, antiqued, stipa and refinished. But when in douht, always consult an expert.
