Santiago, a member of the Oshawa Lgon Tack and Field Club improved on the record she e ualed in last year's pentathlon iiich consista of flive events. She had a time of 9.96 seconds in the 60-metre hurdles, leaped 1.55 metres in high jump, had a distance of 9.4 metres in shot p ut, managed 4.99 metres in long jum p and had a time of two minutes, 28.82 seconds in the 800m race. Her performances in the hur- dles and high jump were per- sonal bests. She will compete in pentathlon at the U.S. interscholastic cham- e onships in Syracuse, N.Y. in T'he indoor competitions are preparations for the outdoor sea- son when Santiago hopes to earn a place on the Canadian teani that will compete at the Junior Pan-Amn championships and as a member of the Ontario team that will compete in the Canada Sumn- mer Games. The Whitby adult team, Ice Elusions, coached by Cathy Dal- ton, were not to be outdone. They came through with a gold medal skate, living up to their rep uation from previous years. Lst year they placed second at the Canadian c ampionships in Regina. The Whitby teams will com- P ete sectional s in Peterborough Teams must qualify at sec- tionals in order to advance to provincials and Canadians. The Whitby Maksteel major peewee AAA hockey team eliminated the Central Ontario Wolves from their -first-round, best-of-flve series, three games of one. Last Wednesday at Iroquois Park, Darryl Lewis scored two goals and had four assists te lead Whiitby to an 8-4 win. Steve Death set the pace early with his aggressive play and he potted a natural hat trick. Jason Hotchkiss played his usuel strong game and contributed a pair of goals and assists while David Farquharson added three assiste. Bryan Crouch finished off the scoring with a single marker and added a helper, along with setups from Adent MacCarl and Matt Cepson. Tom Lawson wes solid between the pipes as he tumned aside 22 wolves shots to help preserve the win. Whitby wrapped up the series in Lindsay on Saturday behind the shuteut goaltending of Josh Evans. Whitby coaches were very satisfied with the disciplined team effort that led te the 7-0 win. Whitby peppered the Wolves with 36 shots while allowing only 13 on Evans. Capson played a great game on the Whitby point, scoring two and adding three assists. Hotchkiss and Crouch aIse' notchied two goals with Death setting up four. Mark Haynes with a single goal and assist rounded up th e Wihitby scoring while MacCarl, Mike Robertson and Dan Ricica had one assist each. Solid defensive efforts were turned in throughout the series by Luke McKay, Mike Cartwright, - Don Campbell and Justin C(ilhns. Wh'itbI anticipates a local Hwy 2 series against Oshawa Kinsmen next, with dates to be flnalized over the next few days.
