Whltby Fiee Press, Wednesday. February 171993, Page 19 By Gilen Konorowski It's net often the Free Pregs g ets te scoop the motering press, ~ lot alone the 'motor cycling press!' The accompanying picture is of the new BW R 1100 RS sports tourng bike. ccording te BMW this is the new generation of cycle te corne from the com pany.' e heart of this new BMW is its 1100-cc engi ne. Power output is 9Ohp at 725rm and 70 lb. ft.of torque at 550 rpmn. This engine is a chain-driven Dodge announces pickup redesîgn B y Glen Konorowski It's about turne. Dodge has finally announced a replacement for its fuli-size pikup.Goignte its 22nd year (1993) the fuil-size Dodge pickup will be replaced in Septernber (anticipated date). The new 1994 Dodge Ram T300 is ail new and not just a facelift as was Ford's F150. Like ail new Chryslor products hitting the marketplace, the T300 is a il new from the ground up. The designers at Chrysler foit their truck should be very dis- Quick now, what kincis of cars and trucks are built in Oshawa? If yDu said Chevrolot, Buick andGMC, you'd only be haîf right.Aon with these, Canada's .MtrCiy also produces such vehicles as Lincoîns, Chrysiers and Ford pick-up trucks. You can't actually drive them home, for each one of these vehicles le iess than five inches long. But theso die-cast model cars, buiit by Durhamn Classics of Oshawa, are fanious as fer away as England, Japan and Australia, and are generally rated by colectors as; being the world's best in their field. Owned by Julian and Margaret Stewart, Durham Classics is the only company in Canada producing this type of collectible. They're not toys but, rather, painstakingly detailed, hand-built replicas of antique cars and trucks. They're aIse a cornpletely Canadien product, made frorn scratch by Durham's seven ernployees i a tiny shop in an industrialmail. They are produced using lrnost the saine stops a real car goes through at the factory. Once Stewart seloctat a car te ho included in the compnny's line-up, a detailed 'master model' is carved. This is rnuch more dificuit than it sounds, for proportions must ho exactly correct; if a fonder or a grille is a fraction of an inch eut, the car won't look right. The master model is used te produce a rubber rnould, and the car bodies are cast in white metal. Other items such as wheels, grilles, headflights and bumpers are aise mouided in rubber and thon the pieces cast separately in motai. Stewart, a draftsperson and tinctive in its shape, reminiïscent of the old military Dodge pickup. Crser felt that ail pickups over the p ast 10 years have al loeked alikçe. Their general feel- ing is that you will either "love it or hate it." You know as weli as I, that they have spent a lot ef money fnding out just how people are gring to react te the new design. ersonally I like the new look, but I have generally liked ail of the recent Chrysler designs. The base engine will-ho a 3.9 engineer by trade, designed rnoet of the casting and forring machines and built thein in his SEE PAGE 20 litre V6 followed by 5.2 and 5.9 litre V8s. As in the present models, the new pickup will be oftered with the Cummins 5.9 litre ime six-cylinder diesel. The big news in the engine department 18 that Dodge will ofer a variation of the 'Viper's V10. This l-cylinder monster will be a cast steel block rather than the alurninurn block used in the Viper. Inside, Chrysler engineers have corne up with an innovative 40/20/40 seating arrangement for the wider cab (widest in class). This allows the centre seat te, be foided down and used as an armrest capable of holding a laptop computer and cellular phone. Behind the seats wili be a net and containers te hold ail those 'what's its' in safety. On the safety side, ail T300 will ho equipWed 4w.ith driver-side, air bas. is is an industry first, in a full-sized pickup. Lîke most pickup on the mar- ket today tde'T 00s will have anti-lock rear brakes. An optional four-wheel anti-lock braking system will ho offered. Extra cab protection will corne in the forrn of side bearns in the doors. This is an idea that has been long overdue. Prices for the new Ram pickup should ho very close te t he big Chevy and Fords. The s-up has allowed for a very siender piston valve design allowing the rider te, really h able te lean the bike over in turns. But what makes this cycie a little more special 15 that there is an optional three-way catalytie converter. Combine thîs wîth the R 1100 RS' electronic ignition system and y ou have a very environmentally safe bike for the future. In BMW tradition, this bike, ieW the resit of the line, is shaft- driven. This makes for a sulent ride over the common chain- driven wheeled cycles. To enhance the ride, BMW designers have made the front fork design a combination tele- scopic and swing arm configu- ration. The front fork pivts on an A armi corning fromn the front of the main chassis of the bike. The dampening or shock absorbing is actually done inside the frame with a coil over shock, FEATURING:YV *1.6 rivre overtmed cam " Fulilime 4 wheel drive with dual rangle tansfer case " Steeibelt radiail ires " Sun roof " Running boards rather than through the forks. Sounds complicated' but it really isn't. Just think of it as a car-like front suspension and you will be ail right. In the rear a paralever and central spring strut 15 usod.. This 18 similar in design te the mono-shock designuse a nmany of teday's of-road dirt bikes. Weighing in at 239 kg (or 527 lbs. for the rest of us), the R 1100 RS is a relatively light touring cycle. This is due in part to the high use of aluminum in the chassis design. This light weight also puts les strain on the rider over. longer perioda. On the cosmetic side, the R 1000 RS cornes in a repu- lar fairing design or a full fairing desin.fl Te fi fairing design incor- porates covers over the forks and lower side of the bike. Se if you're thinking of going in style, maybe the R 1100 R might be the way te travel this summer.
