Pbrua 419 Whi*tby swimmers off: to the nationals Four Whitby swimmers will depart from Toronto International Airport on Monday te the Canadien national championships. This winter the short course champions will be held in Saint John, N.B. on Feb. 24 to 27 et the Canada Cames Aquatic Centre. The swimmers qualified previously for the meet and will be swimming their best events. Renee Ayotte, 16, is in the 50m and 100m breaststroke. One of the best in provincial breaststroke, she ie stili developing ber stroke and efter almost quitting swimming due te, a knee injury, she is on ber way te being a solid netional-level swimmer. Jennifer Crowder, 17, will swim the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, 200m backstroke and 200m individuel medley. She is a very universel swimmer. Although ber best event right now is the 100 and 200m breeststroke, ber times and stroke development predict a very good cereer in the individuel medley. Her goal is te swim the finals in the 200m breaststroke. Kathryn McBurney, 17, is in the 50m and 100m freestyle, 50m and 100m butterfly, 100m breest- stroke and 200m individuel medley. In the age il to 12 cetegory, Tonnia Von Der Heidt of Oshawa placed sixth in e field of 63 competitors. Nicola Frankland and Sarah Ward of Whitby finished eighth and tenth respectively. Desta Ostapkyk of Ajax finished fourteenth. In the ege il te 14 cetegory, Kim Garvey of Whitby was in fourth spot and Sharon Pugh of Whitby, eighth. Jeckie Jay of Oshawa finished fourteenth. In the age 15 and over category, Rochelle Fern.andez of Aja pleced twentieth. One of the festest sprinters in the country, she previously won a bronze medal et the nationels in a 50m butterfiy. She is prepering for university and ber goal is te study and swirn with the fastest world swimmers in the United States. Ashleigh Crowder, 14, is in the 50, 100 and 200m backstroke. One Of the youngest netional-level swimmers in the country, she quelified for the nationels et age 13 and currently in ber age group (13-14) she is ranked third in Canada. The difference between the three swimmers is minimal so Ashleigh is full of optimism. The festest 14-year-old at the nationals will qualify te the 8 Nations tour in Germany G.L. Whitby wrapped up the six- point se ries with a 2-1 victory on, Feb. 17, Don Von Eschscholtz and James Hinkson scoring. On Feb. 16, the Whitby team, sponsored by Don Cherry's Gra- pevine, defeated AMax-Pickering 4-1 Matt Taylor Hinkson, Von Eschscholtz and fiyan Matthews scored. Bryan Sand was outstanding in net. In two previous games in the series, Whitby tied 3-3 and won 6-3. Kyle Wailes, Taylor and Hink- son scored in the tie. Kevin Peel and Hinkson each scored twice while Brandon McBride and Wailes scored in the wîn. Playoff action continues as the l3rooklin-Whitby club prepares to mneet the forces of Markham AAA. The Sitzmarker Ski Club of Dagmar Ski Resort will hold its 8th annuel 'Men's Ski Day> on Friday, Feb. 26.
