Whitby defeated Waterloo tbree gaines straight in the best-of-five series. On Saturday, in the first period in the third gaine, while Whitby was two men short, captain Mark Reid scored, assisted by Paul Webb, putting Whitby on the scoreboard. With two minutes left in the first periodî Waterloo tied the gaMe. Early In the second period htb's Shane Terry, assisted by Steve Austin and Chis Stevens, managed to manoeuvre the puck past a sprawling Waterloo goalteuder, giving Whitby the Iead once again. Less than a minute later Whidtby's Simon Giguere scored te extend Whitby's lead, assists geing to Craig Lanegger and Chris Hartwell. Terry then connected for bis second goal of the gaine assisted by Justin St. Onge and Jeremy McElhanney. Late in the second period defencemen Chris Stevens from the point blasted one past the Waterloo goaltender, assists going to, Brent Johnston and St. Onge. With only three seconds te play in the second period, Whitby's Terry displayed bis stickhandling skills once again and scored bis third goal of the gaine, assist going te Hartwell. Early in the tbidrd period Waterloo scored their second goal of the game. With less than two minutes left on the dlock, Terry, not happy with just a bat trick, seored bis fourth goal of the gaine, assisted by Giguere and St. Onge. Duke McClean of Anderson won LOSSA in the 54 kg. cate- gory while Kyle Hann of Ander- son was third at LOSSA in 61 kg. Anderson was fourth at DYSSA in the teain competition and third at bOSSA. Whitby started the series with a 5-3 win lu Kitchener on Feb. 20. The forward hune of Reece Robertson, David Morasse and Sean Homes was hot, scoring four of the five Whitby goals, witb Bryau Rourke supplying the other goal. Whitby took a 3-0 lead inte the tbird period, but in a five-minute span the score was 4-3 for Whitby. Holmes put the gaine eut of reach with a goal, later in the period. Goalie Josh Hughes played well, and held off a late flurry of Kitcbener shots, te preserve the win. It appeared gaine two would be canicelled, due te the Feb. 21 snowstorrn, but the referees get the gaine rolling 10 minutes later. The late Fart did net hurt Wihitby , a, they got five flrst period goals te Kitcbener's ene. The rest of the gaine was a penalty-fllled affair with Whitby collecting 22 minutes of infractions. 'The final score was 6-3 for Whitby. Whitby scoring wvas provided lu large by the 'Mea' lhue of Ryan Meauey, Paul Tait and Rourke, who collected four goals. Whitby Ice Crystals, coacbed by Jody Joues won the junior division and WhiÈby Ice Angels, coahdb Kelly Jennings, won the juirdvision. Gaine three lu Kitchener on Feb. 27 was a do-or-die affair for the borne side. Whitby came eut witb their trademark first-peried scoring punch, gatbering a 3-1 lead. The Kitchener club was net giving up yet, tying the gaine 3-3 eary lu the tbird. Kyle Ruttan dashed their hopes scoring a goal with 5:04 remaining lu the gaine. Coach Deug Rourke kept the Whitby boys on their gaine, and stayed with the maim that the best defence is offence. The final score was Whitby 4, Mitchener 3. The line of Kyle Ruttan, Scbeepers and Gary Kitamura potted tbree goals, witb Reurke scoring the other. Defensemen Ryan Harris, Dana Blook and Chris Trinkunas each collected assists. Groalie Hughes faced 27 shots in net. Goalies Hughes and Thornton played well in the series as Whitby outscored Kitchener 15-9 in total, while the shots on net were 62 each. Tbe next and final playoff series versus bondon is scbeduled te start March 6 and wrap up by March 14. McElhanney and Reid. Whitby controlled most of the play with strong backchecking and solid goaltending from Ryan Unwin, and skated off with a 8-2 victory. After the gaine the teain enjoyed a well-deserved pizza -- promised by coach Blair Reid if they swept the series. In double-round-robin play between Pickering, Oshawa and Wbitby, and a tbree-way tie for firet place, Whitby dominated in the goals for and against difl'rential. Whitby's first gaine against Pickering, Whitby won 4-0. Goals were scored by Melanie Larocque (two) and Nicole Freeman (two). Assists went to Jessica Brownridge (two) and Karyn Peacocke (two). 1Oshawa then defeated Whitby 2-1. Whitby's only goal was scored by Freeman. Pickering came on strong to beat Wiitby 7-6. Goals were scored be Jessica Williams (two), Jennifer Leighton, Colleen Ackford, Hayly Millard and Jillian Sbannon. Assists weut to Brownridge,- Freeman, Williams, Ackford and Millard. Whitby won tbe final 3-0 over Oshawa. Williams scored three goals, Brownridge, Peacocke and Cassidy witb singles. Assists went te Nicole Freeman (two), Millard, Lindsay Freeman, Leigbton and Ackford. Whitby's first gaine was a 10-4 win over Pickering. Brownridge hand Pickering>s number witb six goals. Nicole Freeman and Peacocke each had two goals. Assists went te, Williamns (two), Nicole Freeman (two), Ackford (tbree), Larocque, L.eighton, Sbannon and Callie Osborne. Whitby then domiuated the Gloucester teain by a score of 7-2. There were goals frein Williams (two), Shannon, Nicole Freeman, Brownridge, Lindsay Freeman and Cassidy. Assists went to Shannon (three), Ackford, barocque, Millard and Williams. Whitby then lest te Markham 4-1. The only Whitby goal was scored by Shannon. Oshawa then lest 4-2 to Whitby. Brownridge scored two, Shannon and Williamns had one each. Assists went ta Ackford, Lindsay Freenian, Peacocke and Osborne.
