Page 16, Whitby Free Press, Wednosday, March 17, 1993 By Cheryl-Ann MacKean About 50 Boy Scouts fromn Whitby will attend the eighth Cana dian jamboree in Kananas- kis Country, Alta., July 1 to 18. Members of* Whitby's lst, 4th, 5th. 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and lth roops and lst Venturers are patcpating in the event in the eRtcy Mountains, about an hour's drive west of Calgary. Thèmes of the jamboree, in- cluding adventure/environnient, brotherhood and challenge, offer learning concepts for the scouts. The adventure/environment program gives the scouts the opportunity Vo explore the moun- tain environment and observe the interactions and interdepen- dencies within the natural environment. The scouts will experience several mountaineering activi- ies, the art of building and then sailing their own rafts , and two half-days of hiking. For the first hiking oppor- tunity the scouts will pack a garbageless lunch and hike up to 1,000 metres in the mountains. The other half-day hike passes through conîferous and Aspen forests and back Vo open prairie on the way Vo Barrier Lake The scouts will also have the experience of building their own log cabin and log furniture. The brotherhood program allows the scouts from across Canada Vo get Vo know each other. A twinning program will allow scouts from Ontario Vo meet the scouts from Alberta. The scouts are each matched with a partner and the two- somes wh wilf participate in every activity. The challenge program is designed Vo provide physical and mental challenges for the scouts. The scouts will have the oppor- tunity Vo work hands-on with sports experts, and create their own handicrafts such as leather moccasins or native beadwork. Fishing is also one of the activities and -there will be a chance Vo improve shooting skills in the shooting gallery. "The Venturers presented a 162-slide documentary for the Rotary Club which impressed them quite a bit," says Smith. To offset costs, scouts have held fundraising activities such as Christmas tree sales, almônd sales, garage sales and car washes. I think what it's doing is heightening the program within the community," says Smith. The Rotary Club is the only cornporate sponsor so far.
