Stores asked to 'cover up' By Mike Kowalski A coalition of community grups want to 'cover up' adult- only videos and magazines sold in local stores. Offlicials of 10 different organi- zations met with Mayor Tom Edwards last week to press their case for a bylaw regulating the sale of adult movie videotapes and magazines in Whitby. The groups want controls on the way the material is sold[ making it less accessible to chil- dren They want Whitby to follow the lead of other Ontario munici- palities that have taken steps to regulate the industry in their communities. "We want some type of restric- tions on the way this material is displayed," sai dSusan Shetler, co- ounder of People Against Por- nography. "It'sproliferated to every cor- ner store, it's well within the reach of children," she said. Among the organizations represented at the meeting were the Family Action Council, Cana- dians for Decency, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Women's League, Whitby Free Methodist Church and Real Women of Canada, said Shetler. While they are not calling for an outright ban on the sale of adult-only material, the coalition does want it taken out of the hands of children, Shetler said. She said books, magazines and videos should either be covered up or kept in an area of the store which is off limits to children. "It's the store owner's decision (how material is displayed)" said Shetler.
