Why does it cost so much to rent the community centre and other recreational facilities in the Town, and why does the Town neglect roads full of potholes? These were just some of the questions posed to Mayor Tom Edwards at a recent Brooklin Boy s Octagon Club meeting. Following a short business session of the club, president Steve Webb explained te, the mayor the purpose and activities of the Octagon Club in Brooklin. Edwards related several stories about his own teen years and bis involvement in boing. Following bis speech, the floor was opened up to questions about municipal affairs relating te, youth in Brooklin. Services at United Church Good Friday service will be held at 7 p.m. at Brooklin United Cburch. On Easter Sunday, April 11, the church will dec'orated with Miies. He explained that long-term activities they develop now will endure te, the benefit of teens in Brooklin in years to corne. The mayor also made a presentation te the club of its official club banner on behaîf of the Brooklin Optimist Club. After the meeting, the mayor was treated te, a short boxing match between two of the Octagon Club members, Ian and Adrian Walendzwica. The niayor bas now nmade arrangements for the group to visit the Ajax Boxing Club on Sunday, April 11. The Octagon Club bas hosted several guests during the past month. They include Anderson CVI principal Arend Dekker; two counsellors from Pinewood Centre in Ajax to talk about tbe risks of alcohol and drug addiction among teenagers; and, most recently, lawyer George Wright te talk about the legal and court systems in Ontario, and te answer questions about the law and how it relates te youth in today's society. The winter months have been busy for the club with weekly meetings, skiing at Dagmnar Ski Resort on Saturday nights and weekly bowling at Leisure Lanes in Oshawa. The club's members helped the Optimist Club during March Break with its art camp at Thunderbird Golf Club in Ashburn and participated in Big Brothers Bowl for Millions. The club bas been doîng a fundraising program mn conjunction with Joes Pizzeria in Brooklin. Members have been going door to door selling discount cards for Joe's for $19.95 each, with a savings value of $185. So far, the club bas raised nearly $1,200 through events. The club also receives funding from the Brooklin Optimist Club. Upcoming events include helping with Durham's Daily Bread Food Drive during Easter weekend and planning a car wash te raise money for the Canadian Juvenile Diabetes Association. The Brooklin club is affiliated with 600 other Octagon Clubs in North Anierica and bas 25 members in Brooklin aged 14 to 18.
