Peewees reach finals The Whitby major peewee selects, advanced te, the finals of the North York hockey league last week by sweeping the first-place North Toronto teain in two straight gaines. The Whitby teain, sponsored by Blades Customn Skate Care, now awaits the west division winners, with the championship series te, start this week. The first gaine against North Toronto was a fast-paced affair that saw a pumped-up Whitby squad take command of the gaine by scornin the first minute. Bilan Criliy scored on a nice set-up from Derek Powers and Stephen Mace. Whitby completeiy shut down North York's offence with great hustie froi its forwards whe, forechecked North Toronto te a standstill for most of the game. Derek Van Egmond, Chad McKenzie, Joei Gingras and Joey Simonetta ail had a great gaine, killing off Whitby penalties with their disciplined pay. Wayne Richard scored Whitby's second goal in the third period on a powerplay, with assists going te, Brady Blakeiy and Powers. Ryan Peacocke iced the gaine, scoring an empty net goal to give Whitby the 3-0 win. This was a team able te win and lose with dignity. Several people made the team go. Robbie-Lynn Wall (manager) organized the teain from day one. Rer perseverance paid off in a job weil done. Tramner Lorne Kahler kept al our aches and pains in Uine and certainiy helped motivate. Assistant coach Tom Osier gave early help at gaines and practie or the first haîf. Woy Lee's intense coaching and motivation certainiy was a positive reinforcement. Rick Welner's assistance helped in the last month te keep our fun atmosphere. Thanks to Rrn Lanegger, Peter Lang and Stuart Mace for their stand irn coaching and training. Special thanks to Kathy Mace and Theona Kahler whe organized our team fundraising. And how can eue forget Val and Mike Rostek's contribution: supplying movies, video games, music and lots of pizza. They aise provided the 'World Series Blue Jays' videotapes, our main fundraiser, and participated in every other fundraiser. Thank you in advance for our year-end party at your house. What really made the team happen was the 18 young men, a truly great bunch of individuals who came together as a very respectful teain. This is the most enjoyinent P've had in over 20 years of coaching hockey. Team players were Chris Mace, Dale Edwards, Chris Arges, Brett Huether, Carlos Roebuck, Jeff Montaigue, David Silva, Kyle Lange, Mark Vanderlip, Rich Welner, Mark Lanegger, Geof Bongard, Rob St. Pierre, Brandon Wall (C), Mike Hogan, Paul Kahler, Brad Lee (A) and Jeff Clayton. Raymond G. Baker Coach -"re oor, North Toronto tied the gaine in the second period but Whitby fought back and took the lead on a goal by Crilly from Powers and Corey. North Toronto pulled their goalie late in the game but couid not beat goaltender Brent Johnson as Whitby held on te, win 2-1. Drew Henry of' Palmerston won the 39.1 kg. division. Placing second were Matt Purko of Sennett (25.7 kg.), Aaron Galiffi of Sennett 27.3 kg.), Robert White of Palmerston (33.6 kg.), Michael Probert of Palmerston (35 kg.), Danny Cohen of Thornton (38 kg.), An drew Wyid of Palmerston (40.5 kg.), Erik Swanton of Sen- nett (41.3 kg.), Devin White of Sennett (42.3 kg.).
