Whitby Free Press, Wedriesday, Apri 14. 1993 Novices reach semi-finals in Spring Classie The Whitby minor novice AAA hockey teain, sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary, cornpletod their season by competing in the Markham Spring Classic teurnamnent and the Mississauga Reps tournament. Whitby went as far as the semi-finals in the Markham teurnainent. Wlitby finished the first round (round-robin) in second place with a 3-1 record. In their first gaine Whitby met their beague arch-rivals Peterborough and beat themn 4-0. Ryan Tutak led the Whitby tearn with two goals with singles going te Tyler Harrison and Michael Kosiw. Assista went te Waade Branch (three), Ronnie Robertson and Kesiw. Chris Nemiasz and Kyle Nova sharod the goaltending duties i earning the shutout. In their next game, Whitby facod the host Markham teain and came out on the losing end of a 7-3 score. Whitby held the strong Markhamn tearn for two periods at 3-3. Scoing for Whitby was Billy Deir (two) who played a strong gamne and Kosiw. Tutak played another strong game, assisting on two of the goals with JamieMllage and Harrison also contributing with assiste. Whitby's third gamne was against the Markham, AA tearn that replaced the Scarborough East Endors at the last minute. Whitby would skate te a 5-4 win in this one with the lino of Harrison, Kosiw and Brandon Fowler leacing the way with nine points. (Fowler had two goals, and two assists; Kosiw two goals, one assist; Harrison, two assisa). Tutak had the other Whitby goal. Other assists wont te Robertson, Milage, Branch and Andrew Pigram. Gaine four was againat Flint, Mfichigan and was the most entertaining with Whitby skating toa 5-3 win. Scoring for Whitby were Robertson on a spectacular end-to-end rush, Harrison, Kosiw, Deir and Kevin Walsh. Assists went te Tutak, Braflch and Pigrain. Strong goaltending was ~ ovided by both Nemisz and ova and they shared the duties ini the gazne. Whitby advanced to the semi-finals, for the third tournament in a row, and faced the Peterborough team agamn. This time the tide would turn as Peterborough won by a 4-0 score. In the hMississauga tournainent, Whitby faced the ultimate test by playing the Markhamn team that finished first in the ETA, Brampton that finished first in the SWTA, and the East Enders, first in the MTHIL. In thoir flrst gamne, Whitby ran into a hot Markharn tearn that had just finished a woek of tryouts for next yoar's tearn selection and lost- 10-0. WVhitby was also without the services of top line centre- Harrison, the skills of Robertson on defence, and forward Kevin Walsh. In their second game, Witby held Brampton te 3-3 affer two periods before losing by a 7-4 score. Kosiw led the way with two goals and one assist; Fowler a goal and two assiste, Lamoit a goal, Peyrnan one assist and Harrison three assists. Harrison was returning te the lineup after a bout with the flu. Goaltending duies were shared again by Nemisz and Nova. Whitby finishes off againat the East Endors on April 17. The tearn staff of John Fox (coach), Ken Clark (assistant coach), Stu Seedhouse (manager) and Ron Tutak traner) were gleasod with the effort put forth Fourteen of the 17 team, members moved from house league te, AAA this year, and with Whitby being the smailest AAA centre, competition was tough against the other larger urban centres. The tearn recoived many a compliment froni opposing coaches for the desire and coînpetitiveness shown in tournaznonts and longue gaines. In the first game, Whitby defeated the hast Oshawa Canadians 7-0. Grant Bouter led the scoring with two goals and an assiat, followed by Scott Gilmour with a pair of goals, Todd Farquharson with a goal and two assiste, Scott Y.ioung with a goal and assiat, Matt Quart with a single goal, and assista going te Paul Gray, Jamie Bamnett, John Lang and Aaron Bryant. Daniel Fletcher earned the shutout. WNhitby played enly one good period in the next gamo and lest 4-2 to Etobicoke. Ryan McLeod set up Barnett fer an early Whitby lead in the firat peiod and Dan Thorne scored the final goal on a power play, assisted by Gilmour. The third gaine was net settled until the final 12 seconds of the game when Quart scored frein Gray and Barnett te, give Whitby a 4-3 victory ovor Cookaville. The other Whitby goals were Ryan O'Leary (unassisted), Barnett from Dan Bosco, Bouter frein Bosco and Bryant. In the fourth, Whitby got back inte top formi, defeating Oshawa Bruina 5-0 te earn a spot in the semi-finals. Sauter picked up another pair of goals with singles going te Gray, Bosco and Barnett. Thorno and OLeary had a pair of assista each and single assiste went to Quart, Peter Liriano, Bilan Vinent and Bryant. Rich Sanders earned the shuteut. Whitby faced another Oshawa team, the Red Wings, in the semi-final gaine. Athough out- shooting Oshawa 20-9, it took Whitby until the last minute of rogulation turne beore Gray scored the 3-2 gamo winner. The othor goals were scored by Thorne from Bouter and Gilmour, and OULary froin Liriano and Gilmour. In the championship gaine Whitby again faced Etobicoke. This tume Whitby controlled the game from the open*ng fceff and won 2-0. Vinent was set up for \the first goal by Farquharson and Bosco late ih the first period. In the second Farquharson scored the insurance goal from Scott Young and Liriano. Sanders earned his second shutout of the tournament. Whitby's team record for the year was 48 wins, 17 losses, six ties and included an OMHA championship, four teurnamont championships (Bolton, Bramalea regional silver stick, Lindsay and Oshawa) and one tournanient finalist (Port Huron international silver stick). Atoms winNorth York titie Whitby H-Àrd-Co recently captured the North York miner atom select hockey chanipienship by defeating North Toronto 3-2 in double-overtime. The win allowed Whitby ta sweep the br-st-of-flve series in three straight. Whitby's previeus wins were by 2-0 and 4-0 scores. The third gaine was an excitung, high-paced affair with bath 'tennis enjeying good scering chances. Mike Astalos skated Whitby te an early lead by scoring on a wrapareund midway through the firat period. David Beckflord assisted on the Astalos goal. David Bosco scored the only goal of the second period te, give Whitby a 2-0 lead. Assista went te Matthew Rae and Kevin Taylor. North Tarante continued te press and this led te a pewerplay goal early in the third period. North Toronto scored again te tue the game at 2-2 and force evertime. The first 10-minute overtime period produced numerous scering chances but no goal. The second overtime started with Rae winning the draw and passing te Kevin Taylor in the faceoff circle. His shot glanced off the post and into the net for the gaine and series winning goal. Whitby erijoyed an excellent firat season in the North York select beague by capturing bath the lege and playoff champienshiips. The coaching staff of Atkinson, Paul Cook, Sargent and manager Louie Mark Geof Michie credit the team's succes te the commitinent of ail the beys te the 'total team" approach.
