Page 5 NATAwIl destroy auto industry in Canada: Ilurtig By Mark Reesor If the North Amnerican free- trade agreement (NAFTA) goes through, you can say goodbye to the Canadian auto industry, says the leader of the newly formed National Party. Mel Hurtig told reporters at a press conference in Oshawa Moday the industry bas lest 29,800 jobs since the U.S.- Canada free-trade agreement bef NFTA oes into effect, you can forget it; by 1998 there are no more tariffs in place, there are no more safeguards that existed with the auto pact... there wiIl be no more automobile industry in this country." Hurtig says General Motors, for example, is planning to lay off 8,000 people in Canada over the next four and a haîf years; GM is also building a plant north of Mexico City that will employ 10,000* people when it's comple- ted, says Hurtig. t"It's important to understand tat (under NAFTA)' there will be no reason whatsoever for the automobile companies to put new investment into Canada." Hurtig advocates bailing out of the free-trade agreement and going back to the auto pact. 'We must have guaranteed production in Canada (and) we must have guaranteed quotas in this country..." Non-American automakers such as the Jap anese, shoulâ also be welcomed, says Hurtig, but only if they want to enter into joint ventures. "That Jap anese company wifl have te be majority Canadian- owned and- controlled (and) the majriy of people will have to be Caadans on the board of direc- tors." Hurtig says the National Party, which he co-founded, is beginning a door-to-deor cam- paign, across the country, asking MEL HURTIG people te sign a petition demand- ina national referendum on NUFTA during the next federal election. "This is far tee important an issue... te be decided by this discredited and unpopular Con- servative government." Hurtig says bis aty will run at Ieast 200 candidates in the next election, including one in Ontario riding.
