But th at will aIl change because of a new product in the carpet industry., Enviro-tech is a car pet system crea- ted from recycled plastic pop and ketchup bottles. The bottles are collected at the recycling centres and shipped to a processing plant. There, the bottles are washed, and the heavy plastic bottoms and caps are removed. The bottoms and caps are recycled in a separate process. The bottles are eut into one-inch Te strips are then cut into smaller chips, which are a mixture of other patealuminura chips frorn leftover ~ttl canps, paper from labels and glue from the bottles and the labels. Air jets blow the paper out of the mixture. The glue is stripped off by a chemi- cal solution. The chips are completely purified and shipped te the carpet plant. This particular type of carpotin g has been tosted for over 10 years, an d it is comparable to other types of carpet, because or its super rosistance to soil and stains, its excellent rosis- tance to matting and crushing, the way it retains its colour, and its increased statie control. Don Murdock, ofWhitby Carpet Ine. says that the carpet is "very strong and durable." "Because of the intorest Canadians have in rocycled products, it is start- ing to become popular," says Murdock. Enviro-tech has been available in the United-States for about 15 years, and it has been available in Canada for the past year or two. As for the price, Murdock says that it is comparable to other carpet sys- tems. Murdock says that this carpet sys- tem keeps more than 40 million pounds of botties out of landfill sights every year.
