May 19, 1993 'Splendid' Suburban offers many features By Glen Konorowski Practical, versatile and utili- tarian are words that corne. to mmnd when I think of the Chevy -EUE Suburban. This truck is unique in the marketpiace as it has the people- carrying capacity of a van and almost the load capacity of a pickup. Some tume ago I had a chance te spend sorne tume driving one outside. Because inside, the, new Trooper is more Iuxurious th'n_ ever. Thates ene of the things I learned in a promotion of National Road Safty Week (May 21 te 27) by Navistar Inter- national Oorp. Navistar, one of Canada's lead- ing heavy truck makers, wants te inform Canadians just how good truck drivers are. Chris Black of Navistar states that truckers clock up il billion kilometres a year and are invol- ved in 24 times fewer aitidents than car drivers. Statistics show that in 1990 lesa. than three per cent of al collisions were caused by trucks weighing over 5,000 kg. My only complaint with the Suburban or ail similar niodels is the placement: of the cassette deck in the middle of the dash. This vehicle is just to hiffg to start reaching way over to ch ange a tape, but that's roaliy a small point in the scheme of things. Even though this is one large vohicle, it is surprisingiy easy to drive. The only difflicuit time was parking in tightly-packed mails. his is when I generalil went tothe outer edges of tL lot, goneraliy niaking it easier on myseif te park. As for parking and mails, cargo is always vital wvhen shop- ping at the mal. Al I can say 18 thaft it's not a concern, there is more than enough rooni in the Suburban for evorything. For those who do a lot of towing, this is the ultimate. The solid feel ta the Suburban makes towing easy. With the right engine, you can virtually tow anything wvith relative ease. If it's si ze you need and don't like vans, the Suburban 18 just what the automotive journalist orders. obile so the ohrhnwr involved in 72 per cent of al traffic collisions. The growing awareness of safety and driving has been pay- ing off. Despite the fact that the number of licensed drivers is on the rise, fatalities due te traffic are down te 1986 levels. Injuries as a resuit of traffic accidents are alse at an all-tixne low, consis- tent with fatalities in 1976. Transpu.çt Canada figures aIse show that mnost accidents occur in the menths of December, November and January. The Suburban cornes in rogu- lar two-wheei (2X4) drive or four- wheel drive (4X4) configuration. A choice of three engines makes up the drive-lino set up on al Suburbans. The f îrst two are 5.7L V8s (350 cu. in.) with varying horsepower ratings. The third is a nionstrous 454 cu. in., now caiied 7.4L V8. This brute is rated at 230hp and 385 lbi/ft. of torque at just 1,600 rpm. My test truck, a 4X4, had the 210 hp 5.7L engine. I have to admit, the 300 ib./ft. of torque this engine produces should be more than enough for the average user. Inside any Suburban, driver and passengors wiil find vast amounts of space unseen in most vehicles today. In fact the Sub- urban wiil hol'd up to nine people in relative comfort. There are two main trim levels on ail Sub- urbans, the well- equipped Cheyenne or the top of the lino Silvorado. My test truck had the hi-lino Silverado trirn.
