Wh-itby Free Press, Wednesday, May-26. 1993, Page 21 Whi"tby- swi*mmer to take on Canada's best Backstroker Ashleigh Crowder, 14, of the Whitby Iroquois Swfrn Club, will ho a top znedal contender when she conipetes against the nation's bestyoung swimmers this week at the 1993 Kinsmen/Kinete Cup, Canada's youth swimming chanipionships. Crowder ranks first and second respectively among Canada's youth swimmers in the lOOm and 200m backstroke events. As well, she was a member of Canada's 4xlOOm medley relay team, that recently won a bronze medal at the Eight Nations International youth meet held in Dortmund, Germany last month. The strong Canadien team won the overall teain titie at the competition. The Kinsmen/K[inette Cup runs from May 27 to 30 at the Etobicoke Olympuni. In order t. qualify swimmers must have met a national timé standard and, for girls, be born in 1978 or later, anc. or boys, bo born in 1976 or later. Another Whitby swmmer, Eric Van Dijk, is ranked flrst in 100m reastrke for Canadian youth swimmers. Other Whitby club swimmers included in the ranking are: Lisa Del Mastro, 100m freestyle; Lindsay Crowder, 100m and 200m butterfly; Ashbeigh Crowder, 200m individual inedley; Brendan Masterson, 200m backstrolce; Aaron Lo, 100m butterfly and 200m incividual medley. Austin broke two records in junior girls events. She edged Veronica Dyer of McLaughlin in the 200m run and had a record time of 24.9 seconds for the distance. She elso won the 100m sprint with a time of 11.8 seconds, esteblishing a new mark for the event. Julie Braham of Trafalgar Castie School was third. Dyer, meanwhile, won both the' 80m hurdles and long jump. Adrien Woodbey of Anderson CVI won two events in junior boys competition, establishing a record in the triple jump.. Woodley was far ahead of the competition with a distance of 14.04 metres for the event. He also won the long jump and was second in ilni hurdies, although both he and winner Dion Trowers of Pickering had a time of 13.8 seconds for the event. Other double winners from Whitby were Pennie Santiago and Stephanie DufTy, both of Anderson CVI. Santiago won the senior girls' javelin and long jup while Duffy won the junior girs' 800M and 1500m runs and was second in the 3,000m. Dufry stiffest com petition came froin Melissa H opkins of McLaughlin who finshed just behind Dufi'y in the 800m, was alrnost nine seconds behind Duffy in the 1,500m and was four seconds aheed of Duffy in the 3,000m. The award was designed to recognize the section that made an exceptional contribution to the 1993 Suniîfe figure skating sectional prograni by best promoting the competition. "A great deal of turne and effort went inte pronioting the event end to ho selected over the other 12 sections across Canada is a tremendous accomplishment and something that we are very proud of," said Joanne Hanrahan, publicity/program chair of the sectional competi tion. Brian Davis of Pickering won the event. Tim Amber of Henry won the open boys' steeplechase. Cort Fowler of Anderson was second in 800m and third in 400m for senior boys. Kerry Wishart of Henry was second in senior girls' 400m hur- dles and Cynthia Cruz of Trafal- gar third in 3,000m. In midget boys competition, Mark Swain of Anderson won the 300mn hurdles and was second in both the 400m and 100m runs. He finished behind Dennis Thomas of Anderson in the 400m event. Cristian Carroll of Henry was third in 800m. Greg Smith of Henry was secon in both the junior boys' 1,500m and 3,000m -- both won by Kyle MeLean of Paul Dwyer. Mike Simpson of Anderson was third in junior 400m. Brent Giles of Henry was second in junior high jump -- both he and first-place winner Jason Brady of Pickering leaped 1.78 metres.
