The Aniderson Street resident embarks on a cross-country plane trip today that. will take him to every province in Canada during the next six days. Especially pleasing for Kiehne is that ever le of the apprexi- mately 6,000-mile journoy will be fiown on aircraft built by de Havilland, Kiehne's employer until his retirement in 1983. "I was neyer able te fiy (pilot) any aircraft I built or worked on, se a few years ago I decided te see if I ceuld fly de Havlland (as a passenger> across the country," Kîehne told The Free Press prier te departing for St. John's, Nfld. on Monday. "I found it was possible te fiy from Newfoundland te Thunder Bay in de Havilland aircraft but there was ne way to get te Winnipeg frem Thunder Bay," he explainedt. Se with the help of Paul Zic- carelli, manager of Marlin Travel agency in Osh awa, Kiehne char- ted a course that weuld make use of regional airlines te ensure that the entire trip is made on de Havilland planes, using regular fliihts and not charters. "We worked it eut se it was possible te fiy frem ene coast te the other " said Klehne. "'The whiole flight is being done on scheduled airlines with Cana- dian-built aircraft," he preudly noted. Today Kiehne files frem St. John's te Halifax and then on te Charlettetewn. After spending two days on Prince Edward Island with daughter Derethy and her fam- ily, Kiehne liles back te Halifax and from there te Fredericton, Saint John, and Montroal. Following a tour of the de Havilland plant ln Mentreal, he centinues on te Toronto, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay, Winni- peg, Regina and Calgary, befere arriving in Vancouver next Tues- dahere Kiehno wilI be met by his brothers Rudy and Vern, who wilI drive hlm te Ceal Harbour, B.C. for the final leg of his trip. Prom St. John's te Vancouver, Kiehne will be fiying in de Havil- land's twin-propellor Dash 8. But for the short jaunt frem the mainland te Inner Harbour, near Victoria, ho will use a Twin Otter sea plane, an aircraft Kiehne terms the "hig-hlight of my affiliation with deê Havil- land." "This will be one of the most exciting moments of the whole trip," ho said. While in Victoria,'Kiehne hopes te meet with members of the west ceast chapter of the de Havilland Retirees' Association before returning homne later this month. A native of Germnany, Kiehne eniigrated te Canada in 1957 and the following year began his 25- y ear association with de Havil- 2an d Ho started on the assembly lino but soon moved up te model and pattern-making, utilizing skills brought from Germany where ho had worked la the aircraft industry. Anexperienced traveller who has been te Alaska and taken a boat cruise around South America, Kiehne is already anti- cipating his next major endea- vour. "I'm 73-years old and looking forward te the next 10 4'ears te travel around the world,' he pro- claimed. Photo by Mark Reesor, Whitby Free Press Wolverines keep -pace i CSL under-12 play The Whitby Wolverines under-12 boys' rep soccer team continues to keep pace with the league leaders in Central Soccer Longue play. The team, sponsored. by Dundas Centre Guardian Drugs and Fcllett's Trade Bindery, has three wins and a less in first division action. The Wolveines hosted their division rivaIs from Pickering on May 27 in a very physical match. Whitby opened the scerng in the eighth minute wheza Graham Macean found the back of the Pickering net following a pass from Jason Evelyn. Pickering added two of their own goals before Kevin Taylor evened the scoring in the l7th minute. Whitby added one more from Bartluis Barrera and another frem Macean before Pickering countered with another two on the small Jeffory Park field for a half-time tde of 4-4. Dion Warren shot the Wolveines into the lead early in the second haîf but an unrelenting Pickering side came back once again te tie the gaine. Mathew Paciga finally iced the gaine for the Whltby side ini the 26th minute with a long free kick that found the mark, for 6-5 victory. Four days Inter, Pickering returned the faveur and hosted the Wolverines on an impressive field site nt Beverly Morgan Park. North Scarborough started quickly and early and had many oppertunities te score but could net capitalize until the l3th minute. Whltby evened the match five minutes from the haîf when Paciga drilled the baIl into the net on a penalty kick. The teams exchanged goals in the second haif with Paciga once again rallying the Whitby side and scoring the equalizer. The Woivcrines had been carrying the play to their visitors for several minutes when a fast break suddenly produced a North Scarboroughi goal wvith nine minutes remaining in the match. Following that strike, the wheels felu off tii': Whitby side and the team foi.nd itself on the short end of a 6-2 docision. Other Wolverines on the team include Michael Gardzinski, Mark Lellanc, Dale Chung, Matthew McGrady, David Wilson and Adam Gruchala.
