Carrled Whitby kids share toys with Davis Inlet Innu The three children of John and Lori Beswick of Whitby are shipping off a favourite toy te Davis Inlet. Working through Innushare, a ~'l. newly-formed Durham Region group, the children are donating their toys "because the kids up there have gonthing to do but sniff gasoline," says chair Mary Wood. The toys formi part of a third shipment of supplies from Innushare which was formed when news of the Davis Inlet children's second mass suicide attempt made world headlines last winter. Wood says, "There's 90 per cent alcoholisn up there but we're working with the women the chief and tL 'Skueuts Kamiti' (wonien's committee). We're not trying to turn them into Whitby homemakers, we're supporting their own efforts to rebuild family life." Wood says that the Innu women are trying to set up a pair of projects -- a moms and tots program in which babies get early childhood education while mothers learn craft and parenting skills, and an after-school program for pre-teens, giving them something productive to do with their time. "We've got wonderful support fromn local Durhamn Region merchants, Canadian Airlines and Air Labrador. We've already shipped around 500 ldlograms of soap, shampoo, toys and Enster candy for the band.
