Photo by Mark Reesor, Whltby Free Press Students meet the science 'challenge' By Cheryl-Ann MacKean About 100 Grade7 and 8 students from Pringle Creek Public School took part in a science and technology "challenge» held by the Durham Industryeducation Council (DIEC) on Juno 10. Tho awareness exercises wore entitied 'Croate an avalanche,' 'Building a platform,' 'Clean up a toxic waste site' and 'Computer puzzle.' The exorcises, designed by the DIEC science and technology committee, wore demnonstrated at the Oshawa Durham Collego campus. For oach exorcise, there wero about 26 students involved. Tho science and technology committeo is mado up of volunteers from local business, industry and education. For the 'Croate an avalanche' exorcise, stu- dents were instructed . to build a structure at least four metors long, with a start height between two and 2.5 meters, and a finish point ending in a wxastepaper basket that was standing upright on the floor. The structure had to allow a bail te rol independently the entire length in the fastest possible time. "We learned a lot about technology and science and math," says Pringle.Creek studont Rob Hancoclc. Ini the 'Building a platform' exorcise, stu- dents learned more about design and techno- Stodent were asked te imagine what it would be like if their entiro class woas tegether in the schcol cafeteria after their teacher was called te the office, and a largo drum of highly acidic drain cleaner spilied in the hallway at the only exit from the cafeteria. It was also expilained te the students that it is after heurs at the school and that nobody mayflnd themn until morning. Te students' goal as an entire class was te get the casas across the acid spili and eut of the school by building platformns made out of the onlymaterials available te them. «Iwas fun. If you're ever stuck in a cafeteria and acid spilîs, yeu and your friends can get out,» explained student, Brett Seibo. "It showed us 110w to use imagination and apply difféent techniques," says student Julie Ruttan. In the 'Clean up a toxic waste site,' students were separated them into four groups: the company, the Ministry of te nvironmont (MOE) omeowners and farmers. Students imagined they wore residents of a community that was buit on land formeriy ecuid by a company which manufacturod olcrcal oquipment. They assumod that technologists working for the MOE discovered that soil in the cern- munit y contained a toxic substance which had leaked from storage sites when the company was operating on that land. It was explained to the students that expo- sure te, this substance, whether directly or by way of vegetable or livestock absorption, could increaso tho risk of cancer and birth dofects. Students were then asked te design a rosident survey, conduct a dobate and develop soi-estng techniques. "It was fun. We learned about the environ- ment and toxic waste and the people who live in the area,» says student Lars Clay. "Science and geography -- it's important. People couid be endangerod,» says student Jewoll Spencer. Teachers from Pringle Creek noted that students wore very ploased with the program and feit that it was a great opportunity for the students te be on a colloge campus. It was aise, pointod eut that instructors had te adjust their programs anid teaching styles te meet the educatedilevel of the Grade 7 and 8 students. "It went really weli. I was roaiiy am azod and impressed by how well the students worked tegtherothsrjet says Dave Shaw, c mitte ocai.Sa works at Ontario Hydro, in the eastern nuclear training depart- ment. «I think it's a great thing te do se, kids get te learn and get experienoe. I Iearned that it takes lots o)f time te take samplos,» says student Darren Burley. "It gives chiidren lcknowledge about the environment,-"sasys Pardeep Mann. 1-I Student job centre celebrates 25 years The Canada Employment Centre for Students in Whitby wiIl hold a 'Hire-a-Student Day> Strawberry Shortcake Fest on Monday, June 28, 11:30 a.m. te 1 p., at the Whitby Seniors' Activity Contre, 801 Brock St. S.
