Free Press. Wednesday, Juno 23. 1993 A poem by Margaret Hughes of Whtby was recently published in « Wind in the Night Sky,' a treasury of today's poetry compiled by the National Library of Poetry. The poem, entitled ' Black, Thwack, i was judged to be arnong the top 3 per cent of ail entries received in the 1992 North American open poetry contest. This was the first time Hughes entered any of bier poetry inte a contest. For Hughes, poetrY is "an attempt te reflect something which is unique te each of us, the human experience." «Black, Thwack' attempts te describe the world of an abused child fromn his/her prspective as he/she tries to mak sense of a chaotic envirennient. Hughes was aise noniinated for "distinguished membersbi"H in the International Society of Poets for 1993-1994. Cemprised of serieus poets who have been, or selected to be, published, membersbi9 is Iimîted to 1,500 members worldide. The society promotes peace, charity and friendship, through poetry and the actions of poets. As a member, Hughes would have an opportunity te contribute a poem te the Wold's Largest Poem for Peace, which is donated to the United Nations. The poem currently contains over 40,000 individual poems, witten by poets from every state/ province and over 41 foreign countries. Hughes was invited to attend the societys 1993 -symposium and convention in Washington, where she would be formally inducted into the society, have an opportunity to read ber poem on Stage, and receive* an ,,international oot of Ment? award plaque and a casstte album containing her work. However, she is unable te attend. The National Library of Poetry seeks te discover and encourage poets by sponsoring conteats that are open te the public, and by publishing poems in widely distributed hardback volumes.
