New seat beit adjuster for kids By Glen Konorowski Whet de you do wben your cbildren are tee big for car seats and don't really fit the seat belts of your car? For semè\tbe answer is a booster seat, aiýd if your child is on the tail side, you're reelly eut of luck. Driving meny diffrent cars, 1 encounter these kinds of pro- blems ahl the time, and beving tbree cildren cen make travel- ling sefely a real chore. My 10.year-old can usually fit in most seats fairly well witb tbe minimal amount of discomfort with seat belts. 'The 4-year-old is et a stage where she is just about eut of ber car seat and yet net reelly eld enough te, sit in the regular seats witb a seat belt. A firm frem Quebec, SOS Reheb, is the exclusive distribu- ters ef a new seat belt edjustere( especially designed witb children, in mind. The product is called SafeFit, end is designed for chil- dren (45 te, 80 lbs.) tee big for car seats and too small te use the car's seat beîts safely. For pi ece of mmnd end in- surence purpeses. the SafeFit was tested by the University of Michigan. The SefeFit pessed al their seat boit tests, holding the shoulder boIt in place. Like the U.S., Canada bas ne rules governing seat beît adjus- ters like the SafeFit. Witb this in mmnd, SOS Rehab sent the Safe- Fit te Transport Canada. Since Transport Canada cennot endorse products, tbey did say that the concept of the SafeFit was sound and didn't bamper the use of the seat beIt. My 10-yeer-old was the first person te try eut the SafeFit. It fit well, moving the shoulder beIt away frem the neck for e proper fit. Ho cemmented that it was quite comfortable and made sit- ting more enjoyable. A mix-up 'on cars with ne car seats, prompted me te try the SefeFit on my 3-year-eld daugbter. To my surprise, the SafeFit works equally weIl on ber, moving the shoulder boIt into e safe position. Sales figures in the United States have shown tbat besidles children, smnaller-framed'- and shorter adults, ara using the Safefit as well. I tried the Safe- Fit myself, on a couple of General Motors cars with the shoulder belt ettacbed te the door franie. The shoulderbelts on these cars tend te rub one's neck and make driving very un- comfertable. By adjusting the SafeFit, the shoulder boît moved away frem my neck, making driving much more relaxed. by JiI Mclntosh A driving vacation .Well, the geod weatber heu inelly errived and that cen only nean one tbing: vacation time. Let those other people pack up .or the cottage or meke their way te the beach. For the car bufl, there's the 'driving vacation,' and a chance te see some real celebrities. Our first step is Victerville, California, horne te the Roy Rogers' Museum. Here you'1l see Roy's 'favourite' Thunderbird, altbough it's net stuffed and mounited the way poor Trigger is. On te Las Vegas, where Harreh's" displays some of the most beautiful and valuable cars in the world. Our destination is even more interesting, tbougb; the red, white and blue ReIls Reyce belonging te the late Libereoe on display- at bis museum. It sits amid such other artifacts as sequin-feoed Liberace mannequins and a plaster cast of bis brother George's bandr Dearborn, Michigan is home te the Henry Ford Museum and bore well see the 1961 Ljincoîn that Kennedy was ricing in wben be was shot. Den't bother looking for the gory details, tbough. Once the investigation was ever, the car wes reupholstered., fltted witb bulletproof glass and handed down te LBJ. Waste makes want, you knew. In Custer, South Dakota you net only get te see the world's oldest car, but you cen even sit in it. Yes, the Bedrock City theme park features- Fred Flintstene's stone-wbeeled flintmobile. Off te, Gibslend, Louisiana te view a plaque cemmemorating the spot where Bonnie and Clyde were ambusbed. The bullet- ridden Ford mey stili eist, and if it dees, it isprobably on display. many 'authentic' Bonnie and Clyde care around that it's impossible te sy whicb one is the actual car. One B&C car that is genuine, hewever, can be seen et the Tragedy in U.S. History Museunm in St. Augustine, Flerida. lt's absolutely, positively the car that Warren Beatty and Paye Dunaway were kIlled in when t he movie was made. The museum aise contains another 'must-seo,' the Buick that, Jayne Mansfield was riding in when it went under a truck. Yes, the roof is still peeled bock if you're ghoulishly incined. 0f course, we couldn't forget the King, 'and a complete tour would probably cover Most of the U.S. Itfs bard te believe that hoe ceuld have possibly owned ail of the cars attributed te him, but stili you sbouldn't miss: *Aspen, Colorado where a 1955 Corvette with a blown-up ewnership verifying its authenticity sits in Boogie's Diner & .Clotbing store with a row of very expensive baseball caps on the hood. ,P Charleston, Missouri where ou can see Elvis' 1974 Lincoln, bis girlfriend iAnda Thompson's 1975 Lincon and a 1976 Cadillac that Elvis bought for a Denver police officer.
