Afler wirtning five and tying one of their first seven gaines of the season, the Whitby minor bantazn basebail teani, sponsored by Peacock Sports, has found the competition a little tougher of late. During the weekend of June il te 13, the teain participated in their second tournarnent of the year in Bolton. Whitby tied their first game with a talented Str,-etsville teani, 5-5. Wbitby came out with the bats booming in their second game, racking up 12 bits or. their way te a 7-2 win over Lordon. Whitby faced Kitchener next but fell te a tough squad 8-3. Providing the offence for VWitby over the three gaines were Daniel Besco, Sean Donnelly, Doug Clarke, Kyle McFarlane, Lars Clay, Ryan Crotin, Daniel Thorne, Colin Cockburn, Ryan Grundie and Bryan Thorpe. On June 15 Wbitby travelled te Cobourg and were soundly beaten 12-1. Chalking up bits for Whitby were Brandon Pigeau with two, Donnelly, Cockburn and Mark Fitzgerald. The next night, the minors were in Ajax and for the second time in two days, the Whitby side was on the short end of a lopsided score, this time 14-5. Getting the Whitby bits were McFarlane, Cockburn, Fitzgerald and Crotin. The ninor bantams' troubles continued on June 18 as they tok on their Whitby major counterparts and were defeated 10-0 in a inercy-shortened game. Playing their fourth game in five days, the Wbitby pitcbing staff (already depleted from injuries) was in tough against IPeterborough at Riverside Park. jBut the gaine proved te be a real character-builder for Whiitby. Down to the home teara, considered one of the top teains in the league, by a score of 7-2, Whiitby held their own and mounted a big comeback to, take the lead 9-8. The gap was shortlived, however, as Peterborough tied the score in their final at-bat and then scored the winning run in extra innings te defeat a stubborn Whitby team 10-9. "Taking one of the league's top teams te extra innings was a gutsy effort and showed that our boys are not quitters," said head coach Carl McFarlane. Aided by 14 walks from three Peterborough pitchers, Whitby would only need hits off the bats of Cockburn with two, Fitzgerald and Besco. 4 localswi Michael Osvonka walked three turnes, was bit by a pitch and stole two bases to spark the Whitby uprising. On June 22 Whiitby was back at home for a date with Little Britain nt Pringle Park. Little IBritain started their number one Ptcher, Mark Cairns, who threw simoke' and only gave up one bit te the Whitby teani. Altbough Witby batters walked seven times, they couldn't get the bits and ended up striking out 18 times. The final score in this contest ended up 6-1 for Little Britain. The lone bit for Whiitby came from Clarke with their only run being forced home on a bases-loaded walk. 0 immers in Cup competition Four members of the Witby Etebicoke.
