York Pioneers bufit a 6-0 lead and then hung on t o win 6-3 over Whitby in the semi-final. York went on to edge Oshawa 4-3 in the final. "We just could not hit,» said Whitby manager Dave Imeson of his team in the semi-final. Whitby had only three hits before the seventh inning when they scored three times and left the bases loaded. Imeson said York, however, was a teami deep in pitching talent and deserving of victory. Wyhitby was plagued by in- juries throughout the tourna- ment. Jerzy Aronowicz pitched three innings in the semi-final before having to leave the game because fof an arm injury. After that, York built a lead. In its first game against a local tearn from the Chittinango Soccer Club, Wolvenines rallied for a 4-1 victery with Grahamn MacLean, Mathew Paciga, Dion Warren and Kevin Taylor scoring for the Whitby side, sponsored by Dundas-Centre Guardian Drugs and Follett's Trade Bindery. Robert Lacrois played well in the Whitby net. The tearn faced a deternmined side froni Cobourg in its next match but managed another 4-1 victory. Whitby's goals were scored by Jason Evelyn, Mark LeBlanc, Macean and Taylor. In its third gaine of the day in oppressive heat, Whitby was matched against the Syracuse Blitz Soccer Club. Last year, the Syracuse side was New York state champions. Whitby pressed early and often but was unable te, find the mark untîl the 20th minute when Bartluis Barrera sent a solid cross~ in front of the Syracuse net ficr Evelyn te score. In its last game against its toumainent hosts, Greece Cobras, the Whitby side played a strong game in the heat te come away with a 3-0 victory. Evelyn, LeBlanc and Taylor did the scoing for Wolveiines. The solid tearn effort gave Wolveriaes their first teurnament chanxpionship of the seson. lite Whitby Strikers girls soccer team, sponsored by Roys Enterprise, went undefeated te win a recent tournament in Erie, Pennsylvania. After beiag delayed by pouring rain and likchtning, Whitby faced Tearn Metro. diii Bassie forced a play te give Whitby a direct kick outside the 18-yard box in which Nicola Scahill capitalized. The girls went on te, defeat Team Metro 3-1 with other goals scored by Brigitte L'heureux and Andrea Babony. The girls dornunated the next match, winning 6-0 against Westlake, giving Whitby's goalie Dawn Pittens her first of three shuteuts for the tournanient. The winning streak continued against Oshawa '3-0 and Erie Strikers 1-0. Whidtby was assured first place in the round-robin when Michelle Farragher scored on a header off a corner kick from Scahill. Fatigued and drenched, the team struggled but was determined te win the final gaine, 2-1 against Teain Metro. It was a well-deserved win for Witby. Scoring in the tournament were Bassie, six goals; L'heureux and Farragher, three each: After dropping three straight games, Whitby Warriors have rebounded to win two of their p st three contests in junior A acrosse. Warriors are still in the hunt for fourth place, and were fifth after defeatingSix Nations 12-10 on Sunday night. Jonas Derks, leading scorer for Wàrriors, had a goal and four assists. Jeif Yoo, Dan Ladouoeur and Wayne Paddick each scored twice while Simon Bowers had four assists.
