This will establish a good preventive prograni for the child and help alleviate any fears of the child and concerns of te parent regarding the childs future dentl development However, regular dental visits should begin at age 3 when they are at a developmental stage, more co-operative, are able ta understand and, hopefully, will complyn with the examination and cleaning procedures. Vour can prepare your child for the dental visit in advanoe ta maJcd, it a positive experienco. Read your child a story about a trip tathe dentist, or play dentist, taking tums looking into each other's maudfis. You may aise have your child colour some pictures of the dental office. Avoid describing any bad experience you may have had as a child - rememrber dentistry has changed a lot recently. At the sanie time, dont make any promises, neither should you attempt ta bribe the child. As soon as teeth appear, begin daily dleaning, starting with a small, momst clath after each feed ta remove any food clebris or plaque. Later on, brush the teeth yourself until the child is aider. Even then, it's a good idea ta supervise or even dispense the toothpaste. Make sure the child does not swallow any fluonide toothpaste. To be continued in next column. --'l
