Twelve tearns entered the playoff round but by Saturday they were down to four teains. Division winners Kiwanis Club, coached by Mike Janazek, Ron Barry and Craig Terry, defeated Legal Beagles and upstarts Family Kartways. The victory gave thein the right to meet divison winners Midas Mumfer. The championship gaine featured the same two teamis that met in the mid-season tournamnent in which Midas prevailed. Both tearns were prepared for a close, hard-fought game. The first inning saw Kiwanis jump ail over Midas st.arting -pitcher Craig Lanegger for three runs, with Midas countering with a lone run in the bottom of' the frarne off of Kiwanis starter Ryan Balan. Kiwanis went ahead 4-1 in the third inning thanks to the hitting of Shane Terry who had a big RBI day. "We've played close garnes al year long -- 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 have been our typical scores. We have a very poor hitting teazn but our strength i5 our pitching staff," said Grieve. 1I knew if our pitchers could keep us close, then we could corne back and win." The fourth inning saw Midas pitcher Derek Grieve hold Kiwanis to no runs for the second time in the gaine thanks to an excellent breaking bail. In their haif of the inning, Midas went ahead for the first turne in the gaine 5-4 compliments of three bases on baîls and what turned out to be the game-winning RBI by fielder Joey Walsh. Fine defensive plays were made by Jason Pollock of Iwanis and Abdul Nadeemn of Midas. Reliever James Grieve of Midas came in to hold Kiwanis off the scoresheet for the balance of the contest to earn the save in relief of hi s brother, Derek. Mfidas teain iembers are Neil Archambault, Brian Baker, Jason Hotchkiss, Chr-is Huinick (most sportsmanlike player), Derek Grieve, James Grieve, Craig Lanegger (most valuable player), Graham Leney, Hugh Panelas, Abdul Nadeem, Shane Ranikine, Greg Sauve, Richard Sanders (most improved player), Tom Sturgess, Joey Walsh and coaches Dave Rankine, Ron Lanegger and Jim Grieve. Whitby's novice III team had two wins in recent lacrosse action. Eric Howe scored two goals and added three assists as Whitby shut out Markham Thunder 10-0 on Aug. 4. Sean Cuthbertson got the shu- tout. Warriors led 1-0 after one p eriod and then scored seven goals in the second period to break open the game. Eric Peterson scored three goals whilew Eric Collins, Dean Retieffem Nick MacKinnon, Adamn Death and Jeremi Brimble each had a goal. On July 31, Cuthbertson's great goaltending kept Whitby close until the attack got moving and Whitby went on ta, defeat Scarborough I117-2. Retieffe scored three goals, Andrew Hewson two and Peter- son and Death one apiece. Whitby led 1-0 aftr the first period and Hewcon's first of two goals late in the second period made the score 3-1 and set the stage for Whitby's four-goal third period.
