Whitby was the first Canadian team ever te, qualify for the quarter-finals of the tournament held at Keele University, near Manchester City. "We did surprise quite a few people" said Whitby Rangers coach Ian Burns, w ose team held fundraising events te help pay for the trip that began July 26. "It was a real expeience for the boys » he said, noting that al teains faced by 'Witby were apprentioe teains -- under-16 teains that each included several players already drafted by teains inBritish professional soccer. "They play a very fast, veiy phbysical type of soccer» said Burs. "For some of our ihoys, it was a rude awakening.* "But they adjusted well to the te of socer.they had to play." Witb found eut just what adjustments had to be made in a 2-0 exhibition loss to Stoke City July 27. "t was an excellent, excellent game,» said Burns. "The. boys really played well.» Whiitby,, Canadian champions last year as an under-iS teain, opened -the tournament with a 3-1 win over Newcastle. Neill Mair, Kevin Ker and Neil Sharp Hawks advance to provincials Whitby Hughes Hawks, sponsored by John Hughes of ReMax Sunimit, won -a bronze medal at the qualifions and wlll advance to the midget softball provincials Aug. 27 te 29. In their flrst gaine against Kitchener, Whitby won 5-2. Nancy Penton led the offence with two hits. Susan Callaghan pitched a three-hitter, striking out seven and walking none. Whitby then lest 3-1 to Aurora, despite a three-hitter by iÀsa H-icks. Michelle Theriault led the VWitby offence, going two for four. Whitby then defeated Kitchener 11-1 as i-cks tossed a two-hitter. Whitby's bats were hot with Theriault, Penton and Rhonda Gannon leading the way with two hits each. Wihitby then defeated Chathamn 7-5. Callaghan pitched for Hawks, allowing six hits, a walk and striking out four. Nadia Roberts and Gannon each had two hits, Theriault, Callaghan and Penton one each. At this point, Whitby had a bronze medal and their next gaine against Pittsburgh was for the silver. The gaine went into extra innings and at thîe end of nine, Pittsburgh flnally broke the tie te win 3-2. Hicks pitched il four-hitter. Lynn Mfichaud went two for three, Theriault and Penton two for four. Other team mnembers are Heather Goulding, Kelly Morgan, Nadia Roberts, Leigh Ann Prakken, Susan Penton, Allison Dye and Jena Slugg. Coaches are Rosemary Theiault, Dianne Goulding, Tracey Butler-Norman and Vern Roberts. In their third gaine, Whitby edged Wolverhampton 1-0 -- a game decided on a penalty kick by MacLean.* That put Whitbyi the quar- ter-finals-in which Whitby lost 4-0 to Cleveland (Middles- borough). B"They thuinped us " said Burns, adding Cleveland took a 3-0 lead after only 18 minutes of play. "It was one of those gaines when nothing went right." Cleveland went on to the final but lost te, another team, from Liverpool. Burns said that with more playing turne in England, Cana- dian youth teams could develop to the calibre of British teains. British teains sometimes have difficulty adjusting to the hotter weather when playing in Canada in the sumnier, he ad ded. Burns said the Keele soccer pitches were of "unbelievable quality." Locally, Whitby is just bohind Malvern in the com petition* for the Central Soccer League Cup. Ontario wins gold The Ontario womien's softball teai, coached by Robin Sluce of Whitby and managed by George Chase of Whitby, won the goi modal at the Canada Sumnier Games. Ontario edged Saskatchewan 1-0 in the championship final as Barb Wright of Palmerston threw a two-hitter. Chrome classîcs THE ANNUAL TRI-REGION meet of local chapters of the Antique & Classic Car Club of Canada was held Aug. 15 at the Pickering Village Museum. Maureen Davies of Thornhill threw a two- bitter in a 2-0 win over British Columbia in medal round play. B.C. was the top seed in the Games while Ontario was seeded fourth. Jackie Hall of Mississauga had a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over Alberta in the other niedal round gaine. Ontario didn't lose a gaine, defeating New Brunswick 10-3, Newfoundland 8-0, Manitoba 3-2 and B.C. 9-0 in gaines before medal round play. the e Ie:to And Brereton, former Ander- son CM student, was a ruember ofth Ontario teain that won a gold medal in the men's 4-by 100-metre relay at the Canada Gaines. Brereton was fourth in the men)s 100m race and llth in long jump at the gaines.
