J.D Churchill, of the Bowman- ville office of Agriculture Canada, says a rabid fox was found last Friday in a ditch on Church Street, north of Ross- land, in Ajax. A rabies epidemic in Uxbridge Township' continues and recent cases east of Stouffvilie and in north Pickering indicate the dis- ease is spreading south in the west part of Durham Region. So far -this year, 61 animais in the re4on have been diagnosed foi'e\by Agriclture Canada's laoaoytests. "This represents only the tip of the iceber g because many foxes and skunks die in rural areas and are not seen or reported," says Churchill. 0f the 61 animais, 36 were foxes, 17 skunks, five cattie, two bats and one cat. Sus pected rabid animais shouidlbe reported to Agriculture Canada at 416-623-5759. Animais bites should be repor- ted to Durham Regionai Health Services at 416-723-8521 and a physician should be consuited.
