A sidewalk art competition, walking tour, meanaenng minstrels and apple pije contest are but a few of the attractions in what could be the Iargest Iineup ever for Heritage Day. Selected locations in t he downtown have been chosen for the sidewalkiart omeition, new this year. Also new this year is a preserves (ii1ickles, chili sauce and hot dog relisb) competition at the GA store at 10 a.m. The apple pie contest is at il a.m. at the Miracle Food Mart. A cake-cutting ceremnony will be held at noon in front of the CIBO at the four corners, as tribute te the launch of HMCS Whitby, a corvette warship in World War II, in 1943. T'he County Town Singera and Whitby Brass Band wil perform, and historic police and flire department vebicles will be on display. Town arcbivist Bilan Winter will lead an educational walk through downtown, starting at il a.m. Historic photos. can be found at the Bank of Montreal and antique dlocks will be on display at the Bank of Montreal and Royal Canadian Legion, where badges and other wartime memoral4ilia will also be shown. Also downtown, honey-making, rope-making, woodcarving, chair-caning and stencihing will be demonstrated. Local artists will spin yarn, rug hook mats, weave baskets and make floral crafte. The Whitby Public Library will hold activities, for those aged 6 and over, that will explore the bistery of the community. Participants are asked te bring family photographs te design a family tree, and share atonies abut t e good old days. Members of the Whitby-Oshawa bran-ch of the Ontario Genealogical Society will be at the library from 1 te, 4 p.m. for those interested in exploring their own family history Activities were coordinated by the Whitby Downtown Business Improvement Area and the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee, with the theme 'Preserving our heritage for our children.' Animated creations depict a typical day in the life of the Lynde family, and music and sound add to the bistonical atmosphere.
