With it goes one of nxy favourite peettimes, yard sales. "Yard saling" is an art with me; 1 cen spot a sign five blockcs away and cen assess a sale at 25 miles par hour ("Worth sping?" husband aslcs; "No," I rply, or 'IHold it? There's bookcs bac sorts of yard sale items, Fm always amazed at how much car stufia eut there on tables marked down te a buck. Firat of all there's the useful stuffi distributors stili in boxes, prk plugs shrink-wrapped on the original cardboard backing. The probleni is that they only carry their part numbors, and se I have ne way of knowing if that - 25-cent fuel pump is for a Lumidna, a Hudson or a Mack truck. Then there are the items wbich were obviously part of someone's Christmas several years ago. Thiese include beaded seat cushions, floor mats that hold several gallons of water, desk sets that fit on the sun visor, and anything made by Ronce or K-Tel. For sanie strange reason, all of these goodies look very new. There are the "sets," and Fn convinoed that soniewhere there are stores stocing these unusual combinatiens. These include hubeaps (there's always tbree of theni), wheeis and tires (usualiy fourtires but only three wheeis), wheel nuts (three if the car needs four, four if it takes five), and * chrome mag wheels (usualîy five -- but who puts a chrome wheei on their spare?). Sometinies I see items that make absolutely no sense, such as the yard sale wbich featured a whole box of different car keys. Perhaps they were a "starter set" for would-be car thieves -- instead of jimmying the door open, the purchaser coufld stand in a paringlotand see if the keys coudunlock any cars. One table I saw featured a few car-show trophies; I guess anyone who wanted te impress bis friends could pay a couple of bucica and drive around with bis new-found awards in the back seat. Another sale had a whole table of half-enipty botties of car wax, ail of them different (what brand did he finally end up iiking, I wonder?). And one had some gently-used parts that, te their credit, were properly labelled with the make, year and engine size, but which were maÎrked at prices lightly 1igher than the dealer woud charge for new ones. Then, amidat ail of that, were the finds. At one sale, I rummaged around in a box of dusty, cobwebbed parts and came up with a gas cap made for my Studebalcer -- for a dollar. At another, I bought a six-volt hand-held flashlight, meant te plug into the lighter of my 47, which set nme back 50 cents. And at a third, I found a "spotlight." These are the chrome llghts that fit on the front fenders of old cars te dress them up. You cen get reproduction one now, that look good but don't actually light up, for around $150. My find was an original one, in perfect condition, with a light that works. And it cost me $4. Maybe over the winter Ilil find a few church-basement runimage sales te tidle me over. In the meantinie, DI sit by the furnace grate, curse the snow, and wait for the first nice day of spring te strt yard saling aIl over agan. 1994 HONDA ACCORD SEDAN EX-R A change min the Accord By Glen Konorowski The Honda Accord, one of the top-seîling cars in North America bas just been redesigned. .For the 1994 model year, lionda decided it was tume to revaxnp their Accord. With new aide impact regulations comning in the U.S. and general improve- ments needed te keep pace with the tumes, Honda feit a'change was needed. The new Accord will come in a coupe and wagon (both te be released later) and the ever popular sedan. The modela will be designated LXK, EX and EX-R. The bodies on ail the modela are new. Like Accords of the past, the front end is low and siantîng. At the rear, Honla bas raised the trunk heigbt, giving it a real Eurepean look from the rear. I would almoat bave te say that from the rear the Accord sedan could almeat pasa for a BMW. Size of the car will stay rela- tively the sanie in ail modela. With these exterior dimensions the sanie, the interier only gets imprevements iii seating and a new dasb. Thri dash looks similar te that of the Mazda 626, in other werds, net tee exciting but done right. Under the hood is where al the action is realiy happening. The base Accord gets the tried and true singie-overhead cani, 2.2-litre, four-cylinder engine of the past generation Accord. This bas been a very successful engine for Honda and is stili worthy of this new car. For more power one can move Up te, the model EX-R and the VTEC enigine. VTEC àtands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Eiectronic Control. If this sounds. a littie complicated, well, it is. It works like this: as the engine speed increases, the engine is aiiowed to breathe more effli- ciently. This intern allows the engine to produce power longer than a normal engine. This technology aise translates te, improved fuel ecenomy. By allowing the engine te breathe better, the engine is net sucking in more gas te, get more power. Some independent testera say that there is an improvement of Up te, 9 per cent on the highway. Those of you wishing for a V6 wiil bave te wait. Honda says that a V6 wiii cerne later. Since a V6 is vital in this market seg- ment, I don't think you will have te, wait tee long. On the safety aide of things, al Accords wiil get driver and pas- senger aide air baga. As I men- tioned earlier, the Accord will get the new aide impact improve- ments te the bedy. These im- provements should increase your chances of survivaî, in side col- lisions. As the Accord is one of Honda's top sellera, there is a lot riding on the auccesa of thia car. To hopefully keep up with the demand, Honda wili be building ail three miodels for Nortb America at their Marysviile, Ohio plant. Honda Jikeâ te, point eut that 82 per ce~ of the new Accord wili be o0 domestic content. Prices will atart at $19, 195 up te $24,950 (about $1,000 more for automatic).
