To th[e 5edio., Honesty, vision denied To the Edtor: Sadly, It Is refreshing to read 'A dishonest day's work' by Paul pagnuelo and Bill Swan's 'Forget the promises' in the Sept. 29 edition of the Whitby Free Press. Nether goes far nor cornes soon onough in fingering political risrepresentation or mis- appropriation which bled us to death's bed. 1 suggest the axe has ail but fallen on North America whose promise to its chiîdren has been artfully extracted to benefit. Correctly fuI in the blank and you rnay begin to understand how critical this vote is, perhaps a last, as a sovereign Canadian. Despite our forseeable condition as jobless slaves to taxation, Ieaderless, with unreconcilable deficits, an abundance of weath has ýeen expensed out to someone's coffers in the Iast 15 years. An honest look reveals we are also enslaved to mammoth bahks and business who enjoy exemptions of- morality and taxation in the narne of capitalism, Junior tour was excellent Tot thoEdîtor: We would like to give recognition to the following people for their effort in putting together the 1993 Durharn- Northumberlanai Junior Goff Tour: Mark Rowland, John Uprichard and the Cherrydowns, Dalewood, Fawn Brook, Lakeridge, Oshawa, Seaton, Thunderbird and Whitevale golf clubs. You gave more than 100 young people a summer of excellent golfîng and a chance to work on their garne undon tounnamont conditions and pressures. There was also the chance to meet new peopie and have some fun. .Congratulations and every success for 1994 to the organizers and the golf ens. Mr. and Mms E.T. Sloop Whitby as poliicians accommodate these patrons of democracy. We in the rank- and file electorage who subsist in the remotest subdirectory partook of the spoils, forsaking our children's tomorrow. The probîerns we on the street face, are ours to wrestle wth. There is no easy way to resolve them. Who dares vocalize we've been misled by collusion of government at the trough, banks and big business? What f lag-bearers of honesty with vision will be granted audience in a democratic machine modif ied to purge it of any group that threatens the establishment? They're lawfully denied access to a nationally televised political debate. They're overîooked or perhaps deemed illegitimate in an article f reely circulated urging us to get smnart about our vote, in the hope it may be meaningful. Mr. Swan, you forgot to include the National Party for Canada in your trust-search ist. I fear our chiîdren may look back to this election and wish such a party had been given a chance to restore some order, for them. Socially and rnoraîly, we're sinking faster than we can stand to consider. Politicalîy, we're bankrupt to preserve what's Ieft or make a corneback. Mr. Swan points out how rapidly history is unfolding in this age, and unfortunate the next government will be, indeed. Empires end. No one is too big to fail. When we appear the most vulnerable, external currency pressures might in f act axe us and our arrogance won't prevent the fallout. Power is transitional. Abuse of it ends in faîlure. We need only check the global landscape every year to confirm it. Recent changes ave ben breathtaking and unsettling. f we embrace independence of thought and action, we have a remote chance. There may not be enough time as this election is upon us. However, I challenge anyone who thinks for himself/herself to fimd someone worth voting for. It could be very well be a Iast opportunity to effect change rather than be despairing subjects to t. DerrIck Balan WhItby 1 ote ed o.. o Strange notions To the editor: Does Queen's Park's lefI hand know what t's right harid is doing? The province's lnterim Waste Authority (IWA) garbage dump site search in DurhamnReion has resulted in a short ist of five sites. Al four sites in Pickering confîict with other major provincial developments. One is Iocated in the pîanned path of Highway 407. Is Queen's Pk planning a four-lane tunnel under the garbage dump, a bridge over Rt, or wilit expropriato extra land for a costly detour around the mega-dump? That same site and two others are within the planning area for the proposed Seaton cornrunity. Is Queen's Park actually proposing to build this "model communityn of more than 75,000 people around the largest garbage dump in Canada? Sureîy this is a new departure in community planning. Centre doesn't promote hate To the Edîtor: Re: Pregnancy Help Centre, Letter, The Free Press, Sept. 29 As I sit here pondering the memory of my first-born chiîd, now age 22, I arn reminded of the fear -- no, terror -- that I faced teîling my girlfriend's father that his 16-year-oîd daughter was pregnant. I remember the shame, guitt and self-doubt that overcarne me. Four days ago, I wrote my son a note to remind him how proud I arn of him. He worked himself through college, rnaking the dean's honour list and passing far above the class average, wfithout any financial heîp from me. I truîy arn proud of this youniq man, who ha.s something to contribute to society. This is only one of rny four childrsn, nons of whorn carne at a convenient time. I don't understand how anyone could consider a centre, open to any womnan facing a crisis pregnancy, offering complets and accurate information and aîlowing her to truly make her right choice, as prornoting hate. I m sonry to see that Judy Taylor, Whitby, misunderstands the Pregnancy Help Centre as promoting hate. A fanatc fthsr of fouir great klds Rick MeKinlay Oshawa The fourth is Iocated in the agriculturai preserve announced by the Ras government as part of the Rouge Park. Preservlng good farmîand by dumping garbage on it is oneO of the strangest notions N'e ever heard corne out of Queen's Park. These blunders raise troubling questions about the viability of a process which seems to have marched forward for two years with its oyes ctarnped closed. l's past time for the Ras govmrment to lot its right hand -- the IWA -- know whatitRs left hand -- the rest of the govmrment -- is doing. Maybe Mr. Ras should just foîîow the Environmental Assessment Act like everyone eIse. Wayne Arthurs Mayor of Pickering To the Edîtor: Last week there was sad and disturbing news 0f the ruling against Sue Rodriguez, with respect to her plea for an assisted suicide. The people responsible for this cruel decision shouîd ail be made to sit with Sue by her bedside during her last few days and witness the agonizing death to which they have sentenced her. They would have more compassion for their cats. Very ikely some more caring 'Militant' outlook exp reesed To the Edîtor: Re: Pregnancy Help Centre (Letter, The Free Press, Sept. 29) In response to the seerningly never-ending conflict of pro-choice versus pro-life, I take exception, not to Judy Taylor's right to express her views but to her refusai of allowing others (whorn she calîs "fanatics") to express theirs. The Pregnancy HeIp Centre is not synonymous with abortion cîinics, and I therefore do not ses her logic in stating, *Are they af raid to reveal their association with the onti-choice faction?" implying underhandedness in cont ribut ions mon de to f unds. Furthermore, though 1 have not been in direct contact with any pro-lifers lately, I have yet to meet one who promnotes "hatred against women." But I would venture to say that Judy Taylor may well be projecting her own emotions on anyone who does not support al detoîls of her militant outlook. Grace Colella Whitby person will ses that she gets her wish when the time cornes. We qan only hope that the day is not -oo far away when the powers-iat-be in Canada wil adopt the sensible and responsible approach taken by the government of the Netheflands, where a terminally ilI patient,' upon requesting suicide on four separate occasions, wilI be granted his/her wish.
