Approximately 115,000 balte ta vaccinate foxee are being air-dropped over a 5,000 square ilometre area te croate a bornier of vaccinated foxes extencing f-rm Georgian Bey te Lake Ontario, in order ta prevent the movemnent of rabies between the eastern and western parte of eouthern Ontario. Last year, the experiment.al program was extended to an ore in Northern Ontario te corfibat an intense rabies outbreak, thoý firet in over 20 yeare in thisa area. More than 100,000 balte were dropped. This year there were no rabiee cases in two of tho three areas covered. Southorn Ontario ueually bas more incidente of animal rabies than any other province or "tte in North America. For the pat five years the ministry hae been conducting a successful project to immunize foxes in ravinos and around golf courses in Metropolitan Toronto. From October- 1990 to August of thie year there bas only been one reported case of rabies in one fox. Since 1987, the ininietry has alse, been conducting a live trep-vaccinate-release (TVR) program te immunize ekunkse in the Scarborough area. This program bas resulted in e marked decrease in the incidence of arctic fox rabies in skcunks. Where previously rabies was p revalent in Scarborough, there asnot been a single case reported in the WVR area since May 1989. The drop between Georgilan Bay and Lake Ontario je the next etep in a plan te eliminate fox-borne rabies fromn Southern Ontario. Aircraft te drop baite will be based at the Oro-Barrie-Orillia airport. The baiting je expected te taes about throe to four days. The baite are yellowieh cubes of fat and wax with a plastic container of liquid vaccine in the centre.
