McTeague swept the sehool, taking 117 of the 146 ballots cast before any of the officiai resuits were ever known. Don Sullivan of the Reform Party was a very distant second with just eight votes and Scott Ormiston P Laycox of the Green Party was vote:i next with five. There was even an Ontario riding al-candidates' meèting1 attended by McTegle, Progresive Conservative Rene Soetens, New Democrat Lynn Jacklin, Rob McMenemy of the National Party, Scott Laycox of the Green Party and independent candidate Doug Anderson. Each candidate left literature which students studied and conipared with newspaper-accounts. They also studied campaign strategy and examined the media's influence on voters. Moreau says the candidates were impressed with the studonts' knowledgo and the quality f their questions, but students weren't so thilleèd with them. "They feit the politicians didn't answer their q uestions," she says, and were a littie dubious ébut whether the solutions they put forward would work. "les interesting te see how, with a bit of coaching,. students cen become involved," Moreau says. "The ids have loved it and learned a lot." Students from one grade 7-8 clasa conducted their own campaigns under party banners. Candidates and their supporters put campaign posters up in the halls, wrote their own platforms and made their own brochures. Competition was so strong "the class which was voting even had spies," says Moreau. The election for the student candietes was te be held Monday afternoon. Students are comparing their numbers with those from the real election te soe how they stack up. Soine of the (real) candidates promised te return after the election, and Moreau says they'd like te invite McTeague back "maybe at the end of the year, te see what he's done or us."
